Too inaccessible Townshend explores a stirring and effective range of facial expressions and bodily movements as he jolts through the repeating stories of Nominal Space, drawing on mathematics and mood swings to chart the uncharted – that vague and exciting area between potential futures. [more] |

![]() THE BECKONING OF HOPE at BATS reviewed by Laurie Atkinson (The Dominion Post) 15 Feb 2008 |
|
From Russia, a sermon Burton’s The Beckoning of Hope is about literature being the springboard out of the spiritual wilderness of the present just as it was for Nadezhda Mandelstam and her husband, the famous poet Osip who died in Siberia in 1938 after rather naively writing a mildly seditious poem about Stalin. Variation lacking Connecting literature and hallucinogenic drugs is a clever and witty way to explore the writing of Fyodor Dostoevsky, and while I’m convinced that the director had an effective vision in mind for Dostoevsky Trip, I fear that sometime during the rehearsal process his vision must have absconded.
