THE LONESOME BUCKWHIPS' CHARITY GALA at The Transmission Room
reviewed by Sian Robertson 27 Apr 2008
Sure to peel your spuds
The Buckwhips – Miri (Miriama Ketu, on violin), Arty (Arthur Meek, on rhythm guitar), Gary (Gareth Williams, keyboard) and Benny (Ben Hutchison, lead guitar) – are putting on a charity gig, the proceeds of which will go to a South Island family band of their choosing... [more]

THE LONESOME BUCKWHIPS: BUCKAPAPA at Downstage Theatre

Someone organise a petition!
It is my painful duty (this is so hard; I have been in denial all day) to announce the demise, the disintegration, the end of The Lonesome Buckwhips. The announcement of their disbanding was the sting in the tail of their last ever (yes, I’m assured it’s no joke) crack-up show, at their one-off Downstage Soundstage engagement last night. [more]

THE LONESOME BUCKWHIPS: BUCKAPAPA at The Classic Studio

BUCKEN AY
Hailing from Otago’s world-obscure province Corstorphine*, these Buckwhips are a somewhat twisted travelling family musical act. Inevitable comparisons: the lackadaisical air the band carries echo the Conchords; their siblinghood brings to mind the Osmonds, with a touch of A Mighty Wind for good measure. [more]

THE LONG WEEKEND at BATS

Questions of trust
I leave this show a bit confused because I thought it was an improv show but the audience is not invited to pitch offers, there is no explanation of the premise or rules, there is no programme to enlighten us and it all plays out like an under-rehearsed semi-scripted play. [more]

THE LOOK OF LOVE – EVOCATIVE/PROVOCATIVE at Downstage Theatre
reviewed by Laurie Atkinson (The Dominion Post) 10 Dec 2008
Smooth as silk, full of emotion
There’s no need to travel to New York for an evening of smooth, sophisticated cabaret performed by a top-liner in her prime. It’s all right here in Wellington even though we may not be sipping cocktails at tables looking out on to the Manhattan skyline. [more]

THE LOOK OF LOVE – EVOCATIVE/PROVOCATIVE at Downstage Theatre

An ideal anecdote to the overwrought cacophony of Christmas
Jennifer Ward-Lealand is practically New Zealand singing royalty. From her stunning entrance in a sparkling black dress with plunging neckline, she rules the stage. She remarks that ‘At the touch of love, everyone becomes a poet’ and she goes on to sing a selection of songs that tell stories. [more]

THE LOOK OF LOVE – EVOCATIVE/PROVOCATIVE at Downstage Theatre

‘Class act’ show of musical excellence could be more dramatically structured
There’s nothing like hearing great songs, well sung. The Look of Love – Evocative/Provocative is a miscellany of songs “celebrating love in all its guises”: profound, foolish, passionate, sexy and (occasionally) even a little twisted. Jennifer Ward-Lealand is on stage once more with .... [more]

THE LOVE CRUISE DINNER DANCE AND CABARET at Bruce Mason Centre
reviewed by Margi Vaz Martin 12 Jun 2010
Afloat on song and dance
About 190 guests board the Apollo Star Liner at the Bruce Mason Centre on Friday 11th June at 7pm. We are on board until after mid-night. We cruise to an exotic destination in Egypt, enjoying pink strawberry daiquiris on arrival, a continuous cabaret show that we are a part of, a three course gorgeous dinner and Liza Corbin live band then dancing till late. THE LOVE OF YOUR LIFE at BATS
reviewed by John Smythe 2 Feb 2011
Magical means in search of an end
What a delightful 45 minutes The Love of Your Life turns out to be. Despite being a totally fanciful – and inconsequential? – story, it is well structured to reveal an engaging range of characters winningly played by their creators, Emma Draper and Kate McGill. [more]

THE LOVE OF YOUR LIFE at BATS
reviewed by Laurie Atkinson (The Dominion Post) 4 Feb 2011
‘Fairytale’ a bizarre muddle
The making of too much apricot jam, an escape from an island by six women, a book called ‘Magic for Dummies’, a trek up a mountainside, what is the love of your life, and then back home to Plimmerton. These are roughly the essential points (or what I could gather from the events on stage) of The Love of Your Life ... [more]
