Overplaying undermines empathy Mike Hudson’s Beautiful Losers is a sinewy, stylistically appropriate retelling of the events of Kerouac’s On The Road, told in the cut up style that mostly defined the movement and the real-life characters that formed the story itself. The rapid-fire writing is well moulded to creating a world of literary as well as physical riposte, taking us easily into the mind and culture of Kerouac from the outset. [more] |

Beat heroes take a walk on the wild side Beautiful Losers is a heartfelt tribute to American writer Jack Kerouac and his larger-than-life muse Neal Cassady – the free-wheeling drifter who was the inspiration for On the Road. [more] |

The Coming and Going of Age As soon as I entered the TAPAC theatre I was struck the realisation that I had seen Beautiful Losers nearly 10 years earlier when it premiered at the Silo Theatre with Ian Hughes and Scott Wills. Wills is reprising his role as Neal Cassady… And 10 years is a long time. While this can bring additional depth to an actor, it inevitably ages them dramatically. An actors’ actual age is not important, but their playing age is, and sitting in the mid-30 to mid-40 decade range, as Paul Glover (Jack Kerouac) and Wills are, they are at the high end for these characters ... Captivated Beats Mike Husdon's script is full of fresh moments, the dialogue standing up to the snippets of Kerouac's writing recited on stage. “You can dance to this stuff!” Cassady says, evoking exactly the giddy tempo of Kerouc's phrasing. But what stands out most is the acting. [more] |

A special gift Music, space, dance, sounds and lighting join together in telling this story. All these aspects are intricately woven together to create the whole, and empower and constrain each other in turns. While free-flowing and creative, there is a sense of restriction. Any sound or movement is possible, but only within a clearly defined space. Dance can only happen if the music agrees and the two must join together to progress the story. [more] |

Beautiful Me indeed The physicality of Maqoma's dance is intense, with slapping feet, lightning speed, twisting torso, startling shimmy and shake, isolations of body parts - hips, shoulders, neck, ribcage - as sharp and clear as the clicking language of Xhosa that accompanies one section. It fascinates. [more] |

A whimsical experiment Beauty / Beast is a re-thinking of the traditional fairy tale, with new elements mixed in with the old. The story is told through a combination of movement sequences, acting, live narration and screen projection (in a nice touch, the words are styled as per the old silent films). It would be nice to see less reliance on the projected words – with more effort directed toward communicating the message through the chosen medium of dance, rather than ‘falling back’ on written explanation (although we recognize the benefit here for the children in the audience, especially). Spirited Local Production of Disney’s Timeless Classic Franchise The story is well known, but for those who have forgotten: Heartless prince is put under a spell by an enchantress who he was mean to, in which he is transformed into a hideous beast. The curse can only be broken by him finding true love by a certain deadline, which of course seems impossible due to his hard-to-love appearance and demeanour. [more] |

Scrambled tale delights This holiday concoction is generously packed with the sort of thing that keeps the tiddlers happily engaged – short scenes, the appropriate mix of wacky and loveable characters, paint box fresh costumes and snappy choreography. This is not even counting audience involvement ploys and the laugh bait written in for adult attendees. The name of the game is fun ... [more] |

Fresh delights from old tales From writing to playing and lighting to costume, the production is one to gladden the what-to-do -today blight that sometimes befalls school holidays. Add to all that some spot-on music from the able Luke Di Somma and The Court has a quality production on offer. [more] |
