A NUMBER at Musgrove Studio, Maidment Theatre
reviewed by Nik Smythe 22 Sep 2007
Questions of existential constructivism
The set is a brown-shaded barcode carpet, complete with cutout numbers (deliberately selected or random?), and mahogany chair and chest. The sepia tone old-photo effect is so striking that the glowing green exit sign on the back wall seems like part of the set but a strangely impossible colour. [more]

TURANDOT at ASB Theatre, Aotea Centre
reviewed by Kate Ward-Smythe 22 Sep 2007
Transported by totalitarian state opera
... when I experience that enviable combination of technical and musical excellence; matched by brave, relevant, creative direction, I am transported. NBR New Zealand Opera’s opening night of Puccini's final work, Turandot – the story of an icy Chinese princess who demands her suitors answer three impossible riddles on the pain of death – was for me, one of those rare experiences. THE BONE KEEPER’S STORY at Niebelheim, Christchurch Arts Centre
reviewed by Lindsay Clark 21 Sep 2007
Food for heart and mind
The history of this work itself mirrors the play’s central image of foraging through memory and time in search of wisdom and fulfilment ... The result is a deeply poetic and sincere offering, well suited to intimate theatre and solo performance. [more]

ITCHY FEET at BATS

A joy
As I settled down to watch the latest work from the Java Dance Company I was prepared to be entertained and provoked. And Itchy Feet did not let me down. [more]

SON ET LUMIèRE at Old St Paul's
reviewed by Helen Sims (The Lumiere Reader) 18 Sep 2007
Lighting the highlight
Son et Lumière (Sound and Light) is a celebration of one of Wellington’s most beloved buildings, the Old Saint Paul’s Church. Approaching the church it looked gorgeous bathed in golden light with the trees lit up also. Entering the church, the beautiful and evocative lighting continued: the vaulted wooden ceiling was highlighted by patterns emphasising light and shade ... [more]

SHINING CITY at Circa Two
reviewed by Melody Nixon (The Lumiere Reader) 18 Sep 2007
Engaging, emotive and inspiring
Dense monologues and threads of the supernatural interweave with psycho-analysis in this examination of the real and metaphorical ghosts that haunt us. Shining City pulls at the heart of what is Real in our everyday relationships ... [more]

ITCHY FEET at BATS

True emotions make dance accessible
Sneaky trick, cooking up an aromatic stir-fry as we settle in for a 6.30 show. The young couple in domestic bliss, taking sensuous pleasure in moving round each other in the cramped galley kitchen, will become known to us as Anna and Greg. A bench becomes their bed and again the close quarters give rise to intimate entwinings ... Meanwhile a single woman, Lauren, has a power chat on her mobile about desirable real estate. [more]

AN ALTERNATIVE VERSION OF YOUR OWN LIFE at BATS
reviewed by Lyne Pringle 17 Sep 2007
Promise, inventiveness, craft and commitment not always enough
The programme notes for this evening of dance are very fulsome and promise much. Virginia Kennard present two works. Order within Disorder is based on mathematical theory. The choreographer states very clearly her intentions about the activities of the dancers in the space and their progressions towards and investigation of ‘three chaotic sets’ ... [more]

SON ET LUMIèRE at Old St Paul's
reviewed by John Smythe 16 Sep 2007
Falls far short of its promise and potential
When a show is called Son Et Lumière and billed as “A Festival of Sound and Light – a unique event celebrating the vivid history of Old St Paul’s”, and when tickets cost $25 ($10 for college students), it seems reasonable to expect quality sound and light elements at least. [more]

FOOTBALLISTIC at BATS
reviewed by Kate Blackhurst (The Lumiere Reader) 13 Sep 2007
Fun to watch, even for a pacifist
The smell of beer and sweat gave an authentic backdrop to the opening night of Footballistic at Bats, as the cast threw themselves around with energy and timing that would be the envy of many a sports team. The basic premise is that it is a riot during a football match ... [more]
