TJ MCDONALD: A MâORI ATE MY GREAT GRANDDAD (NZ) at The Classic Studio
reviewed by Lillian Richards 12 May 2010
Funny, astute and intelligent
T J McDonald – a Billy T Award nominee – has crafted a very well put together show. It’s coherent and clever, intelligent and friendly and whilst it deals with personal material it is not just an hour of self-therapy. [more]

GABRIEL PAGE: L IS FOR LOVE, LOVE IS FOR LOSERS (NZ) at Bodega Bar: The Burgundy Room
reviewed by Maryanne Cathro 25 Feb 2010
Witty, funny, musically very good: a Fringe highlight
Gabriel Page’s show is all about Love songs. Love songs about the kinds of love that don’t usually get sung about. His take is that the usual love songs misrepresent the realities of love, and he proves this point with a short treatise on why Huey Lewis’s song ‘The Power of Love’ is factually inaccurate. [more]

SHAKESPEARE - THE MUSICAL at Circa Two
reviewed by Maryanne Cathro 28 Apr 2010
Brilliant! Shakespeare would be proud!
The Improvisors are shaking their gory locks at us in Shakespeare – the Musical. As if improvising wasn’t a big enough challenge, these cream-faced loons are committed to setting it to music: Yea verily, forsooth! [more]

LATE LAUGHS (WELLINGTON) at San Francisco Bathhouse, 171 Cuba St
reviewed by Maryanne Cathro 2 May 2010
Rolling together with well warmed up comedians
A truer cross section of Kiwi comics [plus English MC] you couldn’t hope to find. Zoe Lyons worked the audience with lightning repartee. An audience as hyped as this one could have gotten out of hand but this gal knows how to get people on side and working with her. [more]

COMEDY DIVAS 2010 at Paramount
reviewed by Maryanne Cathro 3 May 2010
A taste of things to come
The Paramount’s main theatre is a very comfortable place to view comedy. It gives an impression of a cosy night out with the girls, and women definitely comprise most of the audience for Comedy Divas. The humour on offer however is not always cosy and has plenty of pointy bits to amuse. [more]

CLAUDIA O’DOHERTY: MONSTER OF THE DEEP 3D (AUS) at Club Ivy, The Garden Club, 13B Dixon St
reviewed by Maryanne Cathro 4 May 2010
Completely fruit loopy idea is genius
In the world of the comedy festival, stand up is the primary solo genre. Every now and then however, there is a solo show that defies genrifying. Like Toby Hadoke’s Moths Ate My Dr Who Scarf last year, Claudia O’Doherty’s Monster of the Deep 3D tries something completely different. [more]

THE BIG SHOW 2010 at Opera House
reviewed by Maryanne Cathro 13 May 2010
Clever, intelligent, dirty, original
Why is it that Tom Jones can still be singing Delilah 45 years later and bring down the house, yet when a comedian reuses material we’ve already heard, they’re rubbish? It’s so unfair! [more]

THE 5 STAR COMEDY PREVIEW 2010 at SKYCITY Theatre
reviewed by Joanna Davies 23 Apr 2010
Make sure you start with an empty bladder
With just 5 performers over 2+ hours and the inimitable Wil Anderson keeping things (and the audience) rolling, it’s a much less crammed show than the Crunchie Comedy Gala. There’s more time for stories to unfold and, much to the dismay of some, plenty of opportunities to pick on audience members. [more]

ROSE MATAFEO: LIFE LESSONS I’VE LEARNT FROM THE ’60S (NZ) at The Basement, Lower Greys Ave
reviewed by Joanna Davies 25 Apr 2010
Keeps her audience intrigued and captivated
The production budget is obviously huge – Powerpoint and Photoshop both play a major part in the evening’s presentation – but the star is definitely Ms Matafeo. [more]

WIL ANDERSON: WIFUL MISCONDUCT (AUS) at The Classic
reviewed by Joanna Davies 25 Apr 2010
irreverent, bold, loud – and so right on many points
When you see Wil Anderson’s show, it pays to be near the front. That way you don’t miss a facial expression, eye roll or fleeting smirk. Sure, he’s larger-than-life on stage, but it’s the subtle nuances that make him so damn brilliant at his craft. [more]
