reviewed by Jack Gray 19 May 2010
Expressing and questioning our society and generation
Purlieu (Malia Johnston) begins with cascades of piano (Eden Mulholland) and a square of light. Spinning legs and muscular arms of guest dancer Yanhou Du, lofting, shifting from corner to corner with fast, supple arms and release. [more]

From small spaces emerge grand ideas

Physically robust ensemble in tight performance mode
In these times of increasing global conformity, when they are even threatening to take the “Kiwi” out of KiwiBank who can you count on to wave the flag for Godzone? Footnote Dance would have to be one of the front-runners, with their proud proclamation of Made in New Zealand works and a superb poster featuring the North and South Islands composed entirely of bodies in motion [more]

Wellington theatre in rude good health
This has not been an easy year for Wellington’s theatre critics. First, in Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot, Roger Rees’s Vladimir and Sir Ian McKellen’s Estragon, played as out-of-work vaudevillians, passed the time by abusing each other, thus: [more]

2011 - SOUTHERN LIGHTS DANCE COMPANY at Geo Dome
reviewed by Paul Young 2 Oct 2011
Sources in culture, science, spirituality
The dancers exhibit a connection, a deliberate relativity, sometimes apparently triggering each other. They watch each other, I sense their investment but there is nothing at stake, they are waiting to make a decision but there is no anticipation. This is precision. I have been involved in abstract work before, but how this quality of easeful synchronicity is achieved, I don’t know. [more]

Ballet stars of tomorrow, dancing today in the Olympics of dance
Making their first entrance, the twelve finalists, chosen from 70 entrants, promenade waltz onto the stage in a united display of discipline, yet with a singular yearning to win. The candidates then individually perform an intricately choreographed piece expressly commissioned from New Zealander Adrian Burnett. Fiona Tonkin Principal Coach and Ballet Mistress of The Australian Ballet also groomed the young fledglings with her knowledge and expertise. [more]
