PACIFIC POST at Court Theatre, Bernard Street, Addington
reviewed by Lindsay Clark 21 Oct 2012
A gentle homage to folk who kept calm and carried on
With three New Zealand plays staged out of the five seen so far in its 2012-2013 season, the Court's commitment to local playwrights is clear. Moving from the robust farce of Dave Armstrong’s The Motor Camp (June), to the thrilling, chilling Man in a Suitcase by Lynda Chanwai-Earle (August), the Court now offers a gentle domestic compilation in Pacific Post. CHARLES DICKENS PERFORMS A CHRISTMAS CAROL at Middleton Grange School Performing Arts Centre
reviewed by Lindsay Clark 16 Nov 2012
Brought to convincing life with warmth and skill
It is a great pity that this splendidly crafted piece seems to have arrived unheralded and will be gone before word of mouth can do it justice. Those happy few who found their way to the venue enjoyed a generous and masterly incarnation of the great novelist, reproducing the readings which Dickens himself once took on tour to the world. THE THREE LITTLE PIGS at Court Theatre, Bernard Street, Addington
reviewed by Lindsay Clark 21 Jan 2013
Competent, colourful and best of all live
Three energetic pink piggies tumble down the long steep aisles to the stage, mostly on well padded bottoms to start the show. The close proximity of costumed characters delighted all the nippers around me and eases neatly into a dinner time scene onstage. We learn about the defining qualities of the three siblings through their attitudes as they prepare for the meal. [more]

AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY at Court Theatre, Bernard Street, Addington
reviewed by Lindsay Clark 17 Feb 2013
Adversarial revelations
The play builds steadily, as raw emotions are unleashed to several scenes of shocking intensity. Never short of crisp one liners, each scene contributes to the overall jigsaw, layering character and implication in a neat progression. What at first sight seems a vast set (from the meticulous design of Mark McEntyre) resonates with 'adversarial' revelations. [more]

HOTEL at Museum Hotel
reviewed by Michael Wray 25 Feb 2007
Slow cooking enriched flavours
Hotel is a work that boasts a heavyweight line-up, with a liberal sprinkling of Chapman Tripp Theatre Award winners in the creative team. It shows. Hotel is a well developed, seductive piece that is hugely enjoyable. [more]

DEATH AND THE DREAMLIFE OF ELEPHANTS at Downstage Theatre
reviewed by Michael Wray (Capital Times) 18 May 2011
Magical Dreamscape
The cast has reduced by one and there are some clever theatrical elements introduced. Downstage’s larger stage suits the play. Director Leo Gene Peters has transitioned this enigmatic combination of film noir and magical realism into a bigger setting and the play has grown to meet the challenge. [more]

BOOMERS BEHAVING BADLY at Circa Two
reviewed by Michael Wray 25 May 2011
Slightly self-mocking songs and stories
As segues between songs, Keller amuses us with tales that take us from high school to present day. Whether the stories have been written to fit the song selection or the songs picked to fit the stories is up for debate, but it provides an opportunity for her to interact with the audience and set a light, slightly self-mocking tone. SHEEP at BATS
reviewed by Michael Wray 4 Jun 2011
Of men, women, machines and sheep
As playwright Arthur Meek himself describes it, Sheep combines moments of family history and national history. Seven separate short plays that can be taken in isolation form a collective story providing snapshots of both New Zealand’s development and the growth of the Prout / McMillan / Holt family tree that links New Zealand and Germany. FLORAL NOTES at Circa Two
reviewed by Michael Wray (Capital Times) 11 Apr 2012
Musical first
Geraldine Brophy’s new play is a musical examination of the themes that she writes about so well. From previous works, such as Real Estate, we know Brophy is a master at exploring loss, making us laugh while pulling on our heart-strings, but this is the first time she has written a play for the musical genre. THE KEEPERS at BATS

Hypnotic weave
The Keepers is a devised work that weaves together elements of theatre, live music and dance or physical movement. Lighthouse keeper Margaret (Veronica Brady) lives alone until rescuing the drowning Nina (Julia Croft). [more]
