THE WINSLOW BOY at Circa One
reviewed by Melody Nixon (The Lumiere Reader) 5 Sep 2007
Injustice and responsibility confronted with humour and pace
Continuing in its traditional vein of staunch realism Circa’s current play on offer is a formal, compactly structured period piece by Terence Rattigan. [more]

SONGS OF THE SEA at Capital E - return season
reviewed by Melody Nixon (The Lumiere Reader) 26 Aug 2007
Vibrant and entertaining but children kept at bay
Songs of the Sea is a captivating 40 minutes of high energy storytelling, focusing on the myths and legends of the creation of te moana. Drawing heavily on Maori lore and illustrating its tales with puppets, bouncy foam circles (think rock pools, the ocean surface, even waves) and glittery props ... [more]

THE INTRICATE ART OF ACTUALLY CARING at Downstage Theatre
reviewed by Melody Nixon 1 May 2009
Greater cohesion packs a bigger punch
The show that teaches us how to care – or implores us, at least, to try – finds a home in Downstage for the third and final play of this year’s Pick of the Fringe. Jack (Jack Shadbolt) and Eli (Eli Kent) have a much bigger bedroom to play in this time, and they manage to fill it successfully with an enhanced array of visual and energetic colours. [more]

LE SUD at Downstage Theatre
reviewed by Melody Nixon 7 Aug 2009
Indulge your sexism, racism and homophobia all in one shot
While writer Dave Armstrong's broad topical knowledge, word play and sometimes skilful wit is impressive, the only thing he doesn't make fun of is midgets. And that's only because there aren't any midgets currently serving in Parliament. If there were, Armstrong would make fun of them. [more]

CARNIVAL HOUND at The Print Factory, 35 Kings St, Newtown -
reviewed by Jennifer Shennan (The Dominion Post) 27 Apr 2009
Refugee saga not for the faint hearted
The original idea for this work related to the choreographer’s mother’s experience as a wartime child refugee, the specifics of which were Poland, Siberia and eventually New Zealand. However the work’s title and enigmatic programme notes offered instead a “ … macabre, post-apocalyptic carnival ground, where three characters explore women’s unwritten histories in their intuitive perspectives, through family, war, change, suffering and survival.” [more]

A delightful comic cracker
This ballet is a delightful romp and enormous fun, with much adventure, high comedy, fine dancing, spirited music and fabulous stage effects throughout. Gary Harris makes a new setting for an old tale, giving energy and interest to the story line. Production values are as high as we always expect with this company. [more]

KYLIÁN: NEW ZEALAND SCHOOL OF DANCE GRADUATION SEASON, PROGRAMME 1 at Te Whaea National Dance and Drama Centre, 11 Hutchison Rd, Newtown
reviewed by Jennifer Shennan (The Dominion Post) 22 Nov 2010
Revelling in Kylian works
Kylian gives us a delicious and rare evening of short dance works with anchor to a single and coherent choreographic aesthetic. That is a most welcome contrast to the climate of choreographic novelty that has been favoured for far too long by arts funding here. [more]

FAIRY STORIES at Circa Two
reviewed by Jennifer Shennan 1 Apr 2011
A sheer torrent of unstoppable talent
The show is hilarious, breathtakingly costumed, made with mighty loads of mickey, and will have you rolling in your ribs. Jon Trimmer is having a ball, Louis Solino is his intriguing enigmatic self, and Paul is up and out and away. [more]
