FAIRY STORIES at Circa Two
reviewed by Jennifer Shennan 1 Apr 2011
A sheer torrent of unstoppable talent
The show is hilarious, breathtakingly costumed, made with mighty loads of mickey, and will have you rolling in your ribs. Jon Trimmer is having a ball, Louis Solino is his intriguing enigmatic self, and Paul is up and out and away. [more]

BLACK GRACE: VERSE 2 at Opera House
reviewed by Jennifer Shennan (The Dominion Post) 14 Sep 2011
Unfaltering energy
Verses 2 has thematic contrasts yet consistent movement vocabulary across an energized programme of short works. The stamina, speed and precision of the performers are all to the max. [more]

THE MERIDIAN SEASON OF THE SLEEPING BEAUTY at St James Theatre
reviewed by Jennifer Shennan (Dominion Post) 31 Oct 2011
Spirited ballet performance
The spirited new production of this major classic has opened to capacity audiences, a popular open day, healthy bookings for the coming week, and a sold-out schools performance. Gary Harris' heroic architectural sets and attractive costumes are inspired by the Italian Renaissance, and the set changes to music are intriguing. [more]

RIVERDANCE - THE FAREWELL TOUR 2012 at St James Theatre
reviewed by Jennifer Shennan (The Dominion Post) 31 May 2012
A ravishing river of life and lament
It’s a pity this programme is titled Riverdance because many folk have seen that show, more than once, and might think they never need to see it again. Hurry to book a ticket then come back and read why you should. [more]

ROCK THE BALLET at St James Theatre
reviewed by Jennifer Shennan 10 Jun 2012
Stunning, if a little shallow
Well, Rock the Ballet may not rock the ballet, but it certainly rocked the audience. A troupe of six stunningly fit and fine male dancers, and one smiling coquette, sped through almost 30 numbers that drew on a range of dance influences. [more]

THE TOWER SEASON OF CINDERELLA at St James Theatre
reviewed by Jennifer Shennan (The Dominion Post) 4 Aug 2012
Enchantment, inspiration, artistic brilliance on show
Suppose someone took a perfect rose and turned it into a splendid ballet. Someone did. The visual imagery throughout this production is exquisitely inspired by art nouveau, Horta let’s say, in a rose garden, through to a sparkling starry night of Swarowski jewels. Tracy Grant Lord has produced wondrous designs for sets that move to music – and linger in the mind long after curtain down. [more]

GISELLE at St James Theatre

Worthy tribute to ballet supporter
Ethan Stiefel and Johan Kobborg, two stellar forces in world ballet, have combined to direct a streamlined synopsis for this classic. All the dancing serves the story tightly, so its unforgiving ending is inevitable. [more]

SATVIKA - FORMS OF THE FORMLESS at Whitireia Performance Centre, 25-27 Vivian Street
reviewed by Jennifer Shennan 26 May 2013
Mutable and marvellous
Movements of the dance may be beguilingly slow, then trippingly swift, and the grounded sense of balance needed to deliver these adjacently is one of the most admirable aspects of the art that Kinra introduces as “giving form to the formless.” The rigours of training lead to the freedom of performance, and that is picked up kinaesthetically by an attentive audience. We each have a body. This is one of the ways in which it can be moved [more]

MADE IN NEW ZEALAND 2007 at Opera House
reviewed by Dawn Sanders QSM 28 Apr 2007
Substance, disappointment, fun for the young, athletic energy …
Physically fine-tuned and energised bodies performed to a well-filled Wellington Opera House for Footnote Dance’s first performance of its seven city season ... [more]

STRANGE RESTING PLACES at Glen Eden Playhouse
reviewed by Sian Robertson 28 Aug 2008
Story telling from the heart: bravo!
Although the story centres around the misinformed bombing of the monastery at Monte Cassino towards the end of WWII, which resulted in tens of thousands of casualties on both sides, it is at its core about comradeship and family. [more]
