Lovely dancing, playful subversion and poignancy In an outstanding community dance initiative, Spinning Sun is at the tail end of a tour of North Auckland townships where the company has worked with young dancers in each centre giving them the opportunity to be the curtain-raiser for the main performance. In Helensville, the delight on the young dancers’ faces is a joy to see, as they confidently perform their dance and then become highly appreciative front-row audience for the rest of the show. Entertaining, enjoyable and uplifting Of particular note in this production is the live accompaniment provided for certain pieces by the very talented young guitarist, vocalist and composer, Brayden Jeffrey. Jeffrey’s emotionally sincere and moving interpretations are highlights of the performance, especially his own composition of Lost and Found for the Quartz Grey solo in the second half, which is performed with expressive authenticity, strong elevation and dynamic intensity by Hawke Vermeulen. Raising the roof with showband Titans Quick, someone get this band an agent. A homage to the Maori showbands of the 1960s, the Titanics have all the harmonies, musicality, glamour and humour of their heroes. [more] |

Polar passion piece worth it for the penguin For once, a play’s tagline is accurate: this drama-on-ice is pitched as “a woman, a man and a penguin” – and they’re not kidding about the penguin. He is the silent star character of this physical show, not some cuddly mascot but rather a point of contention between scientist lovers as they spend a winter together, alone, in Antarctica. [more] |

Makeover brings vagina show into 21st century Seeing Va-Jaw-Jaw eight years ago, I thought it was woman-roaring stuff that we didn't need any more, a generation behind the times (although written in 1996). But this new rendition, full of hard-hitting and hilarious performances, has changed my mind; perhaps because – thank gawd – they've cut out the audience singalong. [more] |

Visual fireworks, razzle-dazzle and dancing It's so lovely for once to see a musical that is all about the spectacle: the razzle-dazzle, the sequins and, above all, the dancing. [more] |

Greek tragedy alive in Little Italy Arthur Miller plays are like good casseroles; they're conventional and a bit old-fashioned, but satisfying and full of meat to chew on. [more] |

Atmosphere, intimacy and songs with a political edge “Do I shock you?” Sally asks Cliff. “Are you trying to shock me?” he counters. And the answer - both for Sally and for this fabulous, original, risque production of Cabaret is: yes. Why else would Michael Hurst be running around with a two-foot dildo sticking out of his Y-fronts? [more] |

Dysfunctional family compete for misery title Sam Shore writes a good argument – several, in fact – in this lively drama about family dysfunction. He has an ear for middle-class crossfire: an unhappy couple exchange stilted phrases and accusations; a teenager sarkily throws articulate insults at her older siblings who are waaay uncool. [more] |
