Unrestricted Aussie comics keep audience’s amusement well in hand I would have liked to say this is not my cup of tea but such a disclaimer probably sounds disingenuous – besides which a cup of tea suggests something far too genteel for a show that is more like a swig of home brewed fire-water. Barely tasteful ribald romp surprises in the shadows Seriously folks, this show is hilarious. You can’t help but laugh even if you are shocked. Bev Killick opens with about 30 minutes of stand up comedy ... The second part of the show is Busting Out! Emma and Bev do things with their boobs that make women wince and men gasp. [more] |

Classic comedy technique shines through From the opening number that leads directly to the big revelation, there are no illusions held here that this show is going to be anything but rude, loud, blatant, lewd, downright dirty and bloody funny. If you're not up for it then leave right now ... [more] |

The sky’s the limit - but will it fly? On a chilly winter solstice evening in 2007, hundreds of curious men, women and children of all ages hustle into the custom built big top, mobile home to the Buzzy Bee’s Big Day Out stage show, to be witness to the world premiere of a show the toy’s creators, back in 1941, would never have even dreamt of. There is palpable anticipation in the air – will this be a classic homage to be proud of, or... not? [more] |

Sally’s flight from life supports Life Flight The intimacy of The Garden Club, with its bar up the back, suits the cabaret setting very well, avoiding the ‘big stage musical’ feel and harnessing, instead, the sense of a tawdry little dive in a Berlin side street as, in 1930, that city descends into the darkness brought by the rise of the Nazi Party. Life is a cabaret even in small scale Lindsay Rusling has wisely, considering the minute stage at The Garden Club, used many of the changes that Sam Mendes instituted in his 1993 production such as an Emcee who is the total opposite to Joel Grey’s brilliantined, rose-bud lipped, reptilian entertainer... Strong account of wayward world It’s the cabaret of grubbiness not glitz, with sophistication lost in a desperate salaciousness; a world fuelled by drugs, booze and a destructive desire to live only for oneself, before Hitler’s henchmen obliterate its twisted universe forever. [more] |

Atmosphere, intimacy and songs with a political edge “Do I shock you?” Sally asks Cliff. “Are you trying to shock me?” he counters. And the answer - both for Sally and for this fabulous, original, risque production of Cabaret is: yes. Why else would Michael Hurst be running around with a two-foot dildo sticking out of his Y-fronts? [more] |
