Hamilton Fringe 2012
HOME HEART LAND at Meteor Theatre
reviewed by Brenda Rae Kidd 5 Oct 2012
A taonga
Home Heart Land is a collaborative effort. A truly democratic process is apparent – the artist’s work as a team. The result is charming, thought provoking, homely and comforting – yet confronting. [more]

The Body Festival 2012
OUT OF THE BOX 2012 at Aurora Centre, cnr Greers Rd and Memorial Ave, Burnside
reviewed by Emily Napolitano 5 Oct 2012
An explosion of effortless body control and high energy dancing
The evening begins well before the show even starts. The audience knows they are in for a great time, and the crowd is buzzing. Endearingly, we meet each choreographer as they greet the audience between pieces, explaining their concept and giving us some tips on what to look for in each dance. What jumps out at me is the fresh immediacy of the inspiration behind each dance. The choreographers take very real everyday life scenarios and develop them before our eyes. The intimacy of each moment make the dances accessible and relevant, and we see bits of ourselves in each one. [more]

A hoot!
Ummmmmmmmmm. Yes…. Well? Brought to life for the Hamilton Fringe Festival by Apocalypse Lounge, Six Bad Arthouse Plays is funny, ironic and one rollicking big piss-take! [more]

Darkly upbeat and energetic
A lot of what I read about Revolver had prepared me for a deeply erotic, intense show. It wasn’t. It was a fun circus show with an undercurrent of darkness, largely perpetuated by the musi [more]

PRIVATISING PARTS at BATS
reviewed by Ewen Coleman (The Dominion Post) 5 Oct 2012
Good, but only in parts
The satirical writings of Richard Meros have developed a cult following, with two of his previous publications making it on to the stage. This new stage adaptation of Privatising Parts could be considered a sequel to On the Conditions and Possibilities of Helen Clark taking me as her Young Lover. [more]

THE BIG RETHINK at Q, 305 Queen St
reviewed by Adey Ramsel 4 Oct 2012
Informative, enjoyable and moving
Theatre, dance, stand up, visual art, song – it’s all at the Q for a good cause and the producers have managed to create a smart, clever piece of variety that ticks the ‘inform and entertain’ boxes and makes you think. [more]

GROUP A
What are you passionate about? What are your questions about creating theatre? What kinds of stories and storytelling do you want to see on stage? Director Sophie Roberts’ programme note reveals it was such questions that provoked the devising process for this year’s 18 Go Solo pieces from the Third Year Acting Students of Toi Whakaari: NZ Drama School. GO SOLO 2012 at Te Whaea National Dance and Drama Centre, 11 Hutchison Rd, Newtown
reviewed by John Smythe (Group B) 4 Oct 2012
GROUP B
Dualities, be they warring factions or contrapuntal value systems, characterise this grouping. I sense these four pieces – and much of the whole season – could be driven by a deep-felt ‘where to from here?’ concern. Emerging from tertiary education throws an especially strong light on the ‘who am I and what do I stand for?’ question, after all. [more]

2012 Top 30 – Week 3
It is the third week, of the third year of the Short+Sweet Theatre Festival in Auckland. Since its arrival at The Herald in 2010, the ten minute play festival has been firmly embraced by the Auckland Theatre community – emerging and experienced – and has gone from strength to strength. [more]
