THE HERMITUDE OF ANGUS, ECSTATIC at The Basement, Lower Greys Ave
reviewed by Janet McAllister (New Zealand Herald online) 9 Mar 2011
Hard to resist
At first, this late-night one-man show from Australia looks like just a vehicle for aMr Beanimpersonator in younger, more alternative clothing. The talented Vachel Spirason as Angus can certainly ape the open mouth, expressive eyebrows and angry confusion of Rowan Atkinson’s old-fashioned, socially-awkward naif to a remarkable degree. And he isn’t afraid to make fart jokes. [more]

I HEART CAMPING at The Basement, Lower Greys Ave
reviewed by Janet McAllister (New Zealand Herald) 1 Mar 2010
Camp ground cringe gives laughs aplenty in under-the-canvas show
Clever comedy holds the downside of the Kiwi outdoor summer holiday up for ridicule. Camp grounds are lucky that I Heart Camping didn't open earlier in the summer: this lively production would have caused a rash of tent site cancellations. [more]

YOUNG & HUNGRY FESTIVAL OF NEW THEATRE (AUCKLAND) 2011 at The Basement, Lower Greys Ave
reviewed by Janet McAllister (New Zealand Herald) 27 Jul 2011
Excellent duo followed by disappointing disorder
This medley of three one-hour plays, giving stage experience and mentoring to (mostly Pakeha) 16- to 25-year-olds, makes for an evening of two unequal halves. [more]

THE ONLY CHILD at Herald Theatre, Aotea Centre, The Edge
reviewed by Janet McAllister 29 Aug 2011
Aussie riff on Ibsen throws all in the tub
This Silo Theatre production is a spectacle – loads of nudity, swearing, well-paced arguments, satisfyingly angry monologues, messy prop-throwing, and water spillage (beware the front row). There's never a dull moment in this contemporary Australian riff on Henrik Ibsen's little known Little Eyolf ... [more]

I, GEORGE NEPIA at Q Theatre Loft, 305 Queen St
reviewed by Janet McAllister (New Zealand Herald) 22 Sep 2011
Calm, poetic homage to a wide-eyed hero
I want to be a rock in the river of history, changing its flow, muses Jarod Rawiri as George Nepia in this calm, poetic, almost transcendental homage to the 1924 Invincibles fullback. Then he shrugs and says he’s no rock, he’s just a “pebble”. [more]

ANYTHING GOES at Civic Theatre
reviewed by Janet McAllister (New Zealand Herald) 1 Oct 2011
Porter’s merry dance has enough fun to sink a ship
Cole Porter’s smart-to-be-silly, witty-and-warm songs are so exceptional that they could pull this 1934 hit musical comedy through by themselves. But Auckland Music Theatre isn’t pulling back; instead, it layers other treats on top of Porter’s fantastic musical anchor to create a tremendous night out, with brilliant casting and huge song-and-dance numbers. THE MOTOR CAMP at Maidment
reviewed by Janet McAllister (New Zealand Herald) 13 Feb 2012
Campground comedy plays up class-cringe jokes
For the second year in a row, the Auckland Theatre Company - a national "arts leadership" organisation - has opened its annual season with a deliberately crass and bawdy farce. Jokes about bums (some funny, some not) mean bums on seats, and those looking for an evening's light, tasteless entertainment will find much to enjoy here ... [more]

THE BIRTHDAY PARTY at Musgrove Studio, Maidment Theatre
reviewed by Janet McAllister (New Zealand Herald) 12 Mar 2012
Pinter’s Party a refreshing outing
At first glance, the John Parker set for this excellent (potent pause) production looks merely 1950s realist. However - fittingly for a Harold Pinter play - not all is as it seems: the lamps suspended over the action are shaped like hand grenades. [more]

SHIP SONGS at Q Theatre, Rangatira
reviewed by Janet McAllister (New Zealand Herald) 23 Mar 2012
Poignant, rollicking, tragic, lyrical, cheering and stirring
Chameleon storyteller Ian Hughes and composer-performer Don McGlashan are likeable, well-known talents offering an entertaining, layered evening, with the assistance of superb musicians Chris O'Connor and Dave Khan. The decision to revive this well-anchored 2008 show can't have been hard - it has wide appeal for good reason. [more]

SINARELLA at Mangere Arts Centre

Pantomime done Pacific Island style is bright and tight
Last year's Polly Hood in Mumu Land put da hood into Red Riding Hood; this year, the same collaborators – Auckland Theatre Company and the Pacific Institute of Performing Arts – are putting Cinderella into the Southside. [more]
