I HEART CAMPING at Fortune Theatre Studio
reviewed by Sharon Matthews 23 Mar 2010
Lying within tent
The plot-line is deceptively simple: William and Samantha are on honeymoon at the campground that Samantha went to every year as a child. Samantha was lying when she said she loved this place, and her new husband was lying when he said he loved camping. The scene is therefore set for an exploration of the deceits that underlie their relationship. [more]

THE SECOND TEST at Fortune Theatre Studio
reviewed by Sharon Matthews 1 Apr 2011
Essence of the story and time authentically caught
I am delighted that this exceptional touring show has made it to the South Island, allowing us to experience a small but important piece of New Zealand history, and one presented by an outstanding comic writer and performer, within the intimate space of the Fortune Studio. [more]

CAB SAV: A SAVVY CABARET at Globe Theatre
reviewed by Sharon Matthews 14 Jul 2011
An abundance of unique local style
Billed as a cabaret-theatre show, Cab Sav mixes comedy, live music, dance and political satire posing as a puppet show. Songs and comic sketches are loosely woven together by our MC, ‘Mama Kuss’. [more]

IN SPITE OF HIMSELF at Various Schools and Community Venues
reviewed by Sharon Matthews 29 May 2012
Innovative and challenging work plants seeds of further enquiry
The astonishing level of energy on the part of the EnsembleImpact quartet of actors —Brad McCormick, Bianca Seinafo, Nancy Kniveton and Adam Tatana — is truly remarkable in the face of Spartan performing conditions and a punishing touring schedule: 63 performances to 72 schools including eight community showings in Porirua, New Plymouth, Whangarei, Te Aroha, Kerikeri, Whangamata, Keirunga Homestead, and Papakura. SEASONS at Capital E
reviewed by Mel Camp 13 Apr 2009
An intelligent, well designed, and mightily fun learning experience
Seasons is one of the oldest shows in Capital E’s repertoire (first performed in 2000), but it sure is a goodie. This is one exceptionally energetic, educational and enthralling show. [more]

LITTLE WHITE MEN at The Basement, Lower Greys Ave
reviewed by Venus Stephens 10 Nov 2010
You’ll come out wanting a shower
Anyone suffering from writer’s block may envy writer /director Joel Herbert’s flow of dramatic invention. With the Outfit Theatre Company, his Little White Men has achieved a ‘novella’ of attention sparking mayhem. [more]

SALON at Flair Hair Design
reviewed by Nigel Zega (Otago Daily Times) 17 Apr 2013
Nice insights and clever lines
Once you get over being part of the action, seated as if waiting for the next available stylist, you realise you’re eavesdropping on the kind of conversations you could pick up on in reality. [more]

SHIP SONGS at Pacific Blue Festival Club (Shed 6)
reviewed by Hannah Smith 5 Mar 2010
Witty, generous, simple, surprising, magical, stirring …
The sea is a cruel mistress. But if you’re brave or fool enough to ride the ocean wave then you will return with a tale to tell. In Ship Songs spellbinding tales, beautiful audio-visual imagery and toe-tapping sea shanties are woven together in a funny, moving and heart-warming evening of theatre. [more]

MY NAME IS RACHEL CORRIE at BATS
reviewed by Hannah Smith 9 Apr 2010
Moving transition
My Name Is Rachel Corrie made me feel white, middle class and guilty. Which I pretty much think is great. It makes a bid to be political, in the obvious and unsubtle fashion of youth, and in these terms it succeeds. I had a little cry. [more]

THE GURU OF CHAI at Downstage Theatre
reviewed by Hannah Smith 16 Sep 2010
Warm and engaging with simple moments of theatre magic
Hilary Beaton is concerned. Her audiences’ lives are hollow and meaningless. Permanently connected to the internet, they feel disconnected from each other. They are terribly unhappy. Something must be done. And so Hilary has called in an expert to solve the problem. The Guru of Chai proffers spiritual enlightenment in a cup of sweet and spicy deliciousness ... [more]
