ARJ BARKER – GO TIME at Opera House
reviewed by Caoilinn Hughes 9 May 2013
Effortless and easy
Barker is an affable American funnyman, inclined towards hippy-go-lucky philosophy. The philosophy encapsulated in Go Time – and I do love a good moral-of-the- comedy – prioritizes the heart over the head. [more]

BRAD ZIMMERMAN IN SKYDIVING WITH MY MUM at Kitty O'Sheas, 28 Courtenay Place
reviewed by John Smythe 9 May 2013
Living the dream
Zimmerman’s timing and delivery elicit warm laughs and there is a relaxed charm about him that lets him get away with it. Besides, a guy that goes skydiving with his mum can’t be all bad, even if he goes a bit off-colour (joke-wise) in the retelling. [more]

DAI HENWOOD IN ADAPT OR DAI at Q Theatre, Rangatira
reviewed by Lexie Matheson 9 May 2013
Double-happy laughter experience
For me, the improvisational, free-form nature of comedy is what I find most endearing – and exacting – and Henwood is the master of it. He’s charming and amiable and his humour is clever, occasionally tart but never degrading, and always, always smartly performed. [more]

EWEN GILMOUR’S MIDLIFE CIRCUS at San Francisco Bathhouse, 171 Cuba St
reviewed by Nancy Catherine Fulford 9 May 2013
Well structured, accessible, f*ckin’ funny Westie humour
Ewen Gilmore’s show Midlife Circus is f*ckin’ funny. I don’t usually swear, but after last night, I quite like it. It’s relaxing and reminds me of Ewen and what a great time I had. Man it was funny. But not just funny: it was clever. [more]

TITTY BAR HA!HA! at The Basement, Lower Greys Ave
reviewed by Kathryn van Beek 9 May 2013
Smutty fun with surreal puppetry of the breasts
Down on luck and low on morals, Hope and Gloria find themselves working in a strip club in wartime England. As planes fly overhead and police bang on the door the duo perform to their audience of desperados and bond over their shared love of gin, sexual innuendo and the dead guy Johnny under the floorboards. VELA MANUSAUTE’S BIG BALLS at Q Theatre Loft, 305 Queen St
reviewed by Sharu Delilkan (TheatreScenes - the Auckland Theatre Blog) 8 May 2013
A kick in the balls
The tone of a show riddled with silly ball puns very quickly turned serious, making us realise that it was a different ball game altogether. [more]

JAMES NOKISE IN SO–SO GANGSTA at Fringe Bar, Cnr Cuba & Vivian
reviewed by Hannah Smith 8 May 2013
Smart, from the heart, with political bite
James Nokise does not immediately appear like a gangsta: he is a little over dressed for the Fringe Bar actually, in a tux and tie. However, this show is all about defying and transforming perceptions, and so the fancy get up is apt. [more]

ART BY FUNNY PEOPLE at Thistle Hall
reviewed by Hannah Smith 8 May 2013
Draw your own conclusions
Art by Funny People is something a bit different in the comedy festival: a gallery display of art works by comedians (or at least those affiliated with the world of comedy) with a nightly half hour performance by some of the comedic artists involved. [more]

GERALDINE QUINN IN YOU’RE THE VOICE: SONGS FOR THE ORDINARY BY AN ANTHEMANIAC at Q, The Vault
reviewed by Kate Ward-Smythe 8 May 2013
Impressive vocal range deserves a bigger audience
Geraldine Quinn is a powerful singer with excellent vocal craft and stamina. I know of very few female vocalists who can belt, strut and flay themselves round stage for an hour, with the same intensity, passion and enthusiasm that Geraldine gifts to her audience in her one woman show, You’re The Voice. ROB LLOYD IN WHO, ME at The Basement
reviewed by Anna Stillaman 8 May 2013
Sharp, engaging and clever
Who, Me sits somewhere between classic stand-up and theatrical performance. It is a one-man show that includes a wealth of chortling moments, and employs Rob Lloyd’s considerable talents as an actor, storyteller, comedian, MC and even dancer. [more]
