TAUTAI at Mangere Arts Centre
reviewed by Caoilinn Hughes 7 Dec 2010
Inspired Pacific-New Zealand theatre at its best
Tautai tells the story of a young man torn between his Tokelauan mother’s wish for him to move to the safety and heritage of Tokelau, and the local South Auckland urban youth culture of gaming and his ‘biz’ of theft. [more]

CONFESSIONS OF A DRAG QUEEN at The Basement, Lower Greys Ave
reviewed by Caoilinn Hughes 27 Jan 2011
Not so much of a confession but certainly not a drag
Confessions of a Drag Queen is less about confessing the delinquent details of a Drag Queen’s life, and more about distressing over the lack of acceptance of Drag Queens by the gay community. At least, the latter half of the play pines over this issue – and it is certainly an interesting concern to be let in on. [more]

STRIKE: ELEMENTAL at Downstage - return season
reviewed by Caoilinn Hughes 6 Aug 2011
Subtle brilliance, visceral energy
There were earplugs on the armrests of the seats last night at Downstage Theatre for Strike Percussion’s performance, but very few people used them. Most members of the audience didn’t want to miss a beat. If you don’t want to miss a beat in the pulse of New Zealand culture, book tickets for Strike Elemental now. [more]

THE NZ IMPROV FESTIVAL 2011 at BATS
reviewed by Caoilinn Hughes 14 Oct 2011
Making it their own
BATS Theatre is buzzing with the NZ Improv Festival, now in full swing. There are two more days to get in on the action, with three shows tonight (Friday) and five shows tomorrow — two daytime and three evening performances. [more]

THE INTRICATE ART OF ACTUALLY CARING at Downstage - return season
reviewed by Caoilinn Hughes 26 May 2012
Beautiful, surprising and satisfying
The Intricate Art of Actually Caring doesn’t make the prospect of actually caring seem like such an intricate art, at least for the audience. The playtext and its performance are so deeply-felt and unaffected that I found myself caring quite a lot, actually; about poetry; James K Baxter and Hone Tuwhare; about New Zealand; about road-tripping, good conversation and meaningful friendships. WHEELER’S LUCK at WHITIREIA THEATRE - return season
reviewed by Caoilinn Hughes 5 Dec 2012
Truly ridiculous, utterly hilarious, and refreshingly agenda-free farce
I have to admit that I’m often reluctant to review ‘youth group’ theatre, as I worry that the critical eye that is calibrated for first-rate professional productions might need re-calibration, given the inexperienced actors and minimal rehearsal time given to casual, youth ensembles. However, Long Cloud Youth Theatre’s production of Wheeler’s Luck needs no such leniency. [more]

CARNIVAL HOUND at The Print Factory, 35 Kings St, Newtown -
reviewed by Kristian Larsen (Yelling Mouth) 4 May 2009
Impressionistic reverie
In my (predictably) forthright opinion this show is a technical, theatrical, collaborative, and personal breakthrough for choreographer Maria Dabrowska. [more]

RAISING THE TITANICS at Hawkins Theatre, Papakura
reviewed by Tamati Patuwai 3 Jul 2010
Hilarious moments, brilliant timing, mesmerising performances and song
“Pa mai to reo Aroha.” These were the opening words in Raising the Titanics and I feel I must relay them back to the cast and crew: “Your tender song is felt.” Raising the Titanics is an absolute must see! Albert Belz has written a gem. This is Maori theatre at its very best. [more]

MICHAEL JAMES MANAIA at Q Theatre Loft, 305 Queen St
reviewed by Tamati Patuwai 6 Sep 2012
Homage to a Maori Theatrical Classic
The restaging of John Broughton’s deeply influential Maori play, which opened last night in Auckland at Q Theatre’s Loft, remains packed with forceful dramatic power as Vietnam war veteran ‘Mr Manaia’ unveils his turbulent and disastrous life before us. [more]
