Comedy as a desk job The premise is that he’s trying to write his authorised autobiography (having attempted an unauthorised one) and he can’t get started. But his chat between taps and urgent backspace deletes on his desktop laptop pretty well covers his twenty-something years of life to date. [more] See also reviews by: Kate Ward-Smythe |

Prank tales funny but a little long As a professional comic, Charlie Pickering is a bit of a joker. But the curly-haired Australian's got nothing on his dad, Ron, or his dad's best mate, Richard. [more] |

Charming heart-warming hilarity First I just have to say WOW. Charlie Pickering delivers a show which packs the elusive factor; the glow-on. The glow-on is the pleasurable state in which I am laughing, smiling or simply listening in rapt attention for the entire hour. [more] |

More buffet than banquet Here we go again on the devised theatre* debate; specifically, its tendency to produce shows that suffer from premature performance syndrome ... The premise is fine: “The liberation army has disbanded,” a media release announces. “Feminism was ‘just a phase’. In the aftermath of Revolution has anything changed?” [more] |

High energy and fast pace in Kiwi comedy with catchy tunes That said, I was the first to be caught singing the catchiest lines to ushers as I exited the theatre, into the foyer where hordes of young people gathered, excited, pleased and fulfilled with their evenings entertainment. [more] |

Feel-good hilarity Checkout Chicks: The Musical, as its title suggests, is several kumara truckloads of fun. If you've "lost your smile", definitely "take a trip down the aisle" at Shop N Pay at Paru Bay. A high energy 75 minutes written by Julia Truscott and Rachel Callinan, and directed by Simon Coleman, this is an undemanding piece of feel-good hilarity, featuring long onion strings of quick-fire quips set to catchy show tunes. A vibrancy of colour A regular feature each year is the Tempo dance style combos of pick a mix, and Cheek to Cheek - described as a good shindig, duet style - fitted the bill. It brought together tap dance, Spanish dance, tango, hip-hop, contemporary, salsa and ballroom. Glam, glitter, frills, suits and frocks mixed with a touch of razzle dazzle certainly celebrated partner dancing, in this myriad of styles. [more] |
