A SHORTCUT TO HAPPINESS at Court Theatre, Bernard Street, Addington
reviewed by Tony Ryan 11 Dec 2011
Uplifting and optimistic humour
“WE’RE BACK!” was the theme for the opening night of Roger Hall’s new comedy, the opening night of the Court Theatre’s new (temporary?) home ‘The Shed’, and the opening night of the first Court Theatre season since . . . well, since the intrusion of the even more realistic dramas that have upstaged professional theatre in Christchurch this year. THE INTRICATE ART OF ACTUALLY CARING at Telecom Playhouse Theatre, WEL Energy Trust Academy of Performing Arts
reviewed by Gail Pittaway (Waikato Times) 5 Jul 2010
Sometimes infuriating yet very successful portrayal of inertia and vulnerability
One of the most awarded shows of the 2010 Wellington Fringe festival, written by Eli Kent, this play about two guys called Eli and Jack, performed by two guys called Eli and Jack, is effectively a dissertation on apathy, disguised as a road trip. [more]

HEAT at Meteor Theatre

A passionate, powerful play
One of the more extraordinary characters in the Fuel festival this week is Bob the penguin, an unexpected star in this extraordinary play set in Antarctica. [more]

WIT at Telecom Playhouse Theatre, WEL Energy Trust Academy of Performing Arts
reviewed by Gail Pittaway (Waikato Times) 17 Sep 2010
Touching and uplifting
Margaret Edson’s Pulitzer Prize winning play is “a little world made cunningly,” to quote John Donne, the area of expertise for the main character. Of course all plays should be. Here the world is that so beloved by the American Soap opera, the hospital. [more]

THE MISER OF MYSTERY CREEK at The Medici Court, Hamilton Gardens
reviewed by Gail Pittaway (The Waikato Times (this is an expanded review)) 21 Feb 2011
Madcap pace and flawless timing
Moliere’s The Miser has been colonised by this hysterical historical farce set in the swamps around Hamilton in 1867. Moliere’s play, L’Avare, literally ‘the avaricious one’, was written for the court of Louis XIV in France in the 1660s; this version was devised by Stuart Devenie and members of the cast ... [more]

DOUBLE PORTRAIT: FINDING FRANCES HODGKINS at Waikato Museum, Victoria Street
reviewed by Gail Pittaway 8 Jul 2012
A passion to paint against all odds
One of a handful of New Zealand artists to achieve fame abroad, Frances Hodgkins has always been an enigmatic figure. Jan Bolwell’s play attempts to give a portrait of the painter, by animating elements of her letters and linking what is known of her life into the context of painting – particularly British painting – in the early Twentieth Century. Certainly she succeeds in showing us a passionate woman, a risk-taker and eccentric, and introduces an eclectic range of real and imagined people involved in this story. [more]

OLIVER! at Founders Theatre
reviewed by Gail Pittaway 24 Jun 2012
Seamless assault on the senses brings contagious joy
What a great lot of right choices were made in the creation of the latest offering from Hamilton Operatic Society, both in the selection of this particular show as well as in the team who delivered such a high energy, compelling spectacle. [more]

STANDSTILL at Meteor Theatre
reviewed by Gail Pittaway 6 Jul 2012
Irreverent, bizarre, compelling
Unlike anything I’ve seen on stage since the days of the good old avant garde, from the moment the three actors step onto treadmills until they step off an hour later, they are running or stepping though a series of scenarios, so simple as to be convincing, so convincing as to be compelling. [more]

INSTRUCTIONS FOR LIFE at Playhouse, Gallagher Academy of Performing Arts
reviewed by Gail Pittaway 17 May 2013
Enriching
This play is a product of a devising process in which theatre students of the University of Waikato have explored non-narrative elements of performance. The piece is a series of episodes, all thematically based on giving ‘Instructions for Life while avoiding the suck of story, the pull of personality and character. [more]

HOU 2010 at MAU Theatre, Corban Estate
reviewed by Carol Brown 9 Mar 2010
The performance ecology of HOU
HOU is a suite of works that thematically reflect the primordial structures of life through the experiences of birth, nurturance and training, mark-making and lamenting; an itinerary of events mapped and formed within a performance ecology embedded with a Maori worldview. [more]
