CHRIST ALMIGHTY! at BATS
reviewed by Laurie Atkinson (The Dominion Post) 6 Dec 2010
Madcap Christmas story
If you can imagine Patsy from Absolutely Fabulous playing the Archangel Gabriel and a Coro Street beer-swigging house-wife in curlers playing the Innkeeper then you’ll have an idea of the approach this Bats fundraiser revue has towards the Christmas story. [more]

Not for the faint of heart
OMG! An irreverent retelling of the nativity as seen through the eyes an innkeeper who’s reminiscent of good old Chloe (as played by Sophie Hambleton), of a smoking, swearing angel (a divine Ben Crawford) who’s jealous of the plain and now pregnant to God Virgin Mary, of an oversexed shepherd (Jed Brophy in delightful form) ... Irreverent and amusing poke at Christian theology
The great Christian polemicist G.K. Chesterton believed the test of a good religion is whether or not it can laugh at itself. This principle will be sorely tested by Christ Almighty! – the Basement theatre's Christmas shindig featuring a cross-dressing Angel Gabriel, a shamelessly horny shepherd, and some truly scandalous speculation on the relationship between Joseph and his donkey. Not for anyone offended by blasphemy
Natalie Medlock and Dan Musgrove’s masterpiece script captures the essence of human and heavenly nature, and manages to cast aspersions on the most preposterous story ever told. [more]

Irony and irreverence in glorious festive fun
If you don’t already know the deal about Christ Almighty! you have not been paying attention. A rotating cast of Wellington theatre luminaries stumble their way toward greatness in a cheerful Christmas fundraiser. [more]

Makes better sense and brings big laughs
The beauty of Christ Almighty! is a bit like improvised theatre – every night there will be something (or someone) different on stage, bringing their own colour to the role. [more]

As subtle as a Liverpool kiss and as devout as a vegan in leather
It’s census time in Bethlehem. The inn is bursting, Gabrielle’s bitching, the Shepherd’s bragging, the Donkey’s braying and bastard boy-child Jesus Christ is coming. In fact, everyone’s coming. Except poor Mary! [more]

CHRISTIE IN LOVE at Southern Cross Restaurant & Bar
reviewed by John Smythe 23 Jul 2009
Provocative nourishment at lunchtime
In the immediate aftermath of the Clayton Weatherston trial, there is a bizarre serendipity in Rattling Tongues’ first choice: a short play inspired by the actual case of John Reginald Halliday Christie who, in post WW2 England, murdered at least six women and hid or buried them at 10 Rillington Place. As Howard Brenton portrays him, he blames the women who made him feel inadequate and the ‘tarts’ in the street enticed him into having sex. [more]

Refreshing lunch break
Christie in Love is the first production by or at One Sharp! Lunch Theatre. Operating out of the Club Room at the Southern Cross, they present a half-hour or so piece of theatre at 1pm every day. The $16/$12 price of admission rather charmingly also includes soup. [more]

CHRISTMAS AT TE PARENGA (FROM THE END OF THE GOLDEN WEATHER) at Takapuna Beach
reviewed by Michael Smythe 25 Dec 2007
Transported from Takapuna to ‘Te Parenga’
Greetings from the golden weather of Takapuna Beach (which ended an hour or two after this event). Roger Hall organised this production for the first time last year after getting sick of hearing his own voice saying ‘they’ should ensure the Christmas at Te Parenga episode (from Bruce Mason’s The End of the Golden Weather) is performed free to the public at Takapuna Beach on Christmas Day.
