Homegrown fetish, fantasy and nightmare with mystery, humour, pathos, menace and gorgeous bodies Bizarre and brilliant, this dark, sexy cavalcade of burlesque teams up with circus and cabaret to titillate its audience to the edge of their seats. Just as you think you have the level of the joke, or the measure of the talent on show or the dexterity that sees you gape at the amazing feats performed before your eyes, you realise you know nothing. Simple and endearing Without doubt Where Are You, My Only One? is, in turns, charming, beautiful and eloquent. A love story that thankfully ignores the hackneyed clichés of roses, wine and poetry and finds its true self in the air we breathe, the beauty of an unseen country and the colour of a bird. [more] |

A must for teachers, pupils and lovers of satirical comedy Playwright Dave Armstrong is firmly ensconced in the Kiwi psyche as a guarantee of a lively night out at the theatre. With a string of hits behind him, Armstrong has struck the formula and rattles it out to perfection, though never once churning out predictable settings or themes. [more] |

Coro remembered and mocked panto style Love it or loathe it, it's here. With an undeniable – and, in some areas, enviable – rich history of 63 years, two thousand storylines, 92 marriages, 156 deaths and too many to mention affairs, births, abductions, kidnappings and pints pulled and downed, it looks as if it's here to stay, on our screens at least. Dazzling. Amazing. Breath-taking. I’m in a quandary with this review. After years in Cabaret and Variety myself I’m ‘in the know’ about this genre and how it works. I’m also semi ‘in the know’ as to ‘magic tricks’ and how they work. One can never ‘un-know’, and it does spoil an experience like this somewhat, while allowing me to express two viewpoints. [more] |

A good talking to for a laugh Here is a world for women: the lounge or the boudoir. And when Geraldine, Pinky and Lyndee-Jane arrive in floor length cream Balmoral gabardine coats, scarves tied tightly to the chin and clutching Warehouse red, New World turquoise and Countdown green bags, we are treated to a slick, witty comic romp. Theatre that intrigues, enthrals and enriches Jacob Rajan enchants and entertains, magics and mesmerises us through a superbly crafted and skilfully performed modern version of the story of Punchkin that seamlessly links the ancient with today: Kitisar talks to the moon and complains about KFC setting up next to his tea stall. Artistically erotic and cheeky The usual sea of white haired women was replaced by a dominance of glossy bald pates and funky clothing at the Theatre Royale New Plymouth, on the 1 June, for a performance of In Flagrante; 13 dances with plenty of cheek. [more] |

Rich, raw theatre Anyone who has grown up in rural New Zealand knows about abandoned dairy factories and freezing works. The stark set of Sydney Bridge Upside Down incorporates the ‘roof’ of such a place where danger, darkness and daring characters play and lurk. [more] |
