Thrilling blend of ice skating, ballet and theatre It’s difficult to describe a performance of Cinderella on Ice without using words like “magical” or “sumptuous” or a phrase like “spell-binding”. In my case the spell the Imperial Ice Stars cast over their audience was frequently broken by interjections from my young daughter who was so impressed by the splendid experience that she could not contain her delight. If you have ever been impressed watching Olympic ice skating on TV, then Cinderella on Ice is even better, mixing of the magic of theatre with the thrill of ice skating. [more] |

Fabulous ballet on ice one of the hottest shows in town To the uninitiated, ballet on ice may seem a little naff. For days leading up to Saturday night's premiere of Cinderella on Ice people openly laughed at my excitement and enthusiasm for the coming event. But those who have discovered the extraordinary dexterity, grace and power of the Imperial Ice Stars will know it is, in fact, one of the most exhilarating entertainment spectacles you will ever witness. Falls well short of professional standards The first of many things wrong with Cinderella: New Zealand’s Best Top Model is that it presupposes a familiarity with such TV shows as New Zealand’s Next Top Model, Project Runway, etc. which are more attuned to tweens and teens than the 4 to 7 year old demographic this production is pitched at. Less than satisfying Although there are some cleverly adapted songs and the show does partially redeem itself at the end by getting the audience up to dance, there are long wordy expositions with little action not helped by a lack of pace and energy from the performers. [more] |

Every character somehow sympathetic, no matter how dishonest or grotesque Within seconds of the opening sequence in which a hard working, subservient Cindy (Dena Kennedy) attends to her intellectually disabled client, I am transfixed. [more] |

Subversive circus Being a circus aficionado, when I approached the Ronaldo’s Circenses circus tent last night, I could sense that something was different, and not just the season. (And boy did summer shut us out like a teenager’s slammed door last night.) [more] |

Decade’s journey captured with enthusiasm and commitment Triple8Funk, who define themselves as a strong Hip Hop/urban dance company, celebrate a decade of dance with their show Circus 10. This group, also known as the Company of University Dancers (CUDZ), was founded by Joel Fuentes Gallarde, an immigrant from the Philippines who loved to dance and wanted to share that passion with others. Intense experience not in tent ... A circus without a big top? There is something disconcerting about entering the theatre instead of a tent but it is well worth arriving early and soaking up the pre-show antics of several performers doing very silly things. Kimmy, the show off schoolgirl, gets good laughs at the absurdity of her ’tricks’ especially when at the same time the less vocal (at this stage) Stuntman is causing himself pain with pegs ... Intense energy, daring and heart – and yours may be in your mouth! This is one of the best live shows I’ve been to, of any kind. Circus Oz are astonishing, terrifying, hilarious, enthralling – such that a few times I was so gob-smacked I forgot to applaud. It made me seriously consider running off to join the circus. [more] |
