Unparalleled production values Between us, my date and I had seen many Cirque du Soleil shows, both here and abroad. We both agree that Saltimbanco, with its joyful gibberish language and enchanting world of mime and movement, is the most accessible, uplifting and happiest of them all. [more] |

Gob-smacking spectacle and beauty Dralion is a reminder of why Cirque du Soleil’s world-famous fine-tuned formula elevates their shows head and shoulders above the rest. It is the exquisite integrated design from every creative department – lights, composition, costumes, choreography, set and sound – that makes Cirque du Soleil simply the best. [more] |

Feral alchemist commands total respect Secret is essentially a one-man show, with Le Guillerm playing a sort of feral alchemist, a tortured genius alone in his menagerie of self-created beasts and contraptions. The character is repellent at first, as all eccentrics tend to be, but as the show progresses we see many sides to him: the poetic, the meditative, the industrious. [more] |

A different kind of master for the ring When you see Cirque Ici – and you must – be prepared to leave all your expectations of what a circus should be, at the door. If you do, you will enter a realm of magic hitherto unknown, and you will be amazed once again, at the wonder of the world and its beings. [more] |

Dark challenge to conventional expectations Secret feels almost like an anti-circus work – created and performed by Johann Le Guillerm (and his assorted assistants) it is dark and moody, almost hostile. [more] |

Spectacle with a message There is no aerial work in this show; it is song, dance, acrobatics, feats of strength, contortion and juggling – with all manner of objects and bodies – all packaged in African sensuality, which is lively, joyful, pumping with energy and happily devoid of vamp, camp or sleaze. Unstoppable energy and sheer exuberance needs editing and better technical support The unique appeal of Winston Riddle’s Circus of Sensuality MOTHER AFRICA lies in the wild, raw exuberance of his 40-strong multi-talented cast of dancers, singers, musicians, contortionists and other colourful characters. Sourced from nine African Nations, they fill the stage and openly share their infectious warmth and unifying happiness. [more] |

Prepare to be happily freaked out Extraordinary performers produce some hair-raising moments Well, they certainly got their timing spot on – Aucklanders are soggy to their bones at the moment. But the beaming smiles, cheery bongos and helzapoppin dancing of these crazy African performers took the audience to their hot, sunny and dry mother continent ... [more] |

CIRQUE NON SEQUITUR at Meteor Theatre reviewed by Karen Barbour 1 Jul 2012 |
|
Tantalising images disrupted by humour; fantasy juxtaposed with hyper-realism … In the centre of the cavernous Meteor Theatre, the focus is a raised stage with a pole in one corner. Decorated with a glowing, scarlet table set with fruit and sweet things, the stage is framed by sumptuous folds of hanging crimson silks. From four sides the audience for the Fuel Festival presentation of Cirque Non Sequitur waits, glasses of wine in hand, in anticipation of the action to come. [more] |

Homegrown fetish, fantasy and nightmare with mystery, humour, pathos, menace and gorgeous bodies Bizarre and brilliant, this dark, sexy cavalcade of burlesque teams up with circus and cabaret to titillate its audience to the edge of their seats. Just as you think you have the level of the joke, or the measure of the talent on show or the dexterity that sees you gape at the amazing feats performed before your eyes, you realise you know nothing.
