MADE IN NEW ZEALAND 2012 - FOOTNOTE DANCE COMPANY at Q Theatre, Rangatira
reviewed by Roxanne de Bruyn 23 May 2012
Art - not just movement
For all four works, the stage is very stark and empty, so lighting and music provide the context. The lighting is striking and the music is pivotal to the understanding of the pieces. The dancing is good and solid, with lots of strength and physicality. There is a strong feeling of the inspiration behind the movement inherent in the dancers. There are similarities is the style throughout the pieces – many contortions, isolations, rhythmic repetition and the touching and entwining of the group. [more]

THE TEEN SHOW 2010 at TAPAC Theatre, Western Springs
reviewed by Miriam Marler 9 Oct 2010
Enthusiasm, elegance and energy
What is abundantly clear throughout the show is that the dancers own their performance. This is evident through their vibrant stage presence and engagement with and within the work. [more]

WE'RE BACK at Auckland Grammar Centennial Theatre
reviewed by Jennifer De Leon 9 Oct 2010
If all the boys and men in NZ danced, just imagine!
Fifty young men… boyz-to-men, actually, who can all keep time, is a wondrous thing to see. These same fifty boyz-to-men furthermore have both the courage and intention to put themselves ‘out there’ on stage, sans props, sans special effects ... [more]

HOTEL - A CABARET at Glenroy Auditorium
reviewed by Jennifer Aitken 15 Oct 2010
Mutual engagement and reciprocal energy
In Hôtel, Helen Medlyn and Penny Dodd, Medlyn’s long-time collaborator and pianist, expose glimpses of dark deeds, decadence and desire within the deeply sparse and deadened hush of the hotel room. [more]

Promising debut for new young company
This production of Bare marks the first outing for newly formed Theatre company Counterpoint. Created by young people, for young people seeking access to an industry that can be notoriously difficult to break into, Counterpoint’s aim is to provide acting opportunities and promote the stories of young people. SQUARE EYE PAIR at Fortune Theatre Studio
reviewed by Ben Blakely 20 Jun 2012
A delight to watch …
Growing up with a television as a parent/best friend is something I can relate to as a child of the 80s and 90s. So I was immediately drawn to the concept of Square Eye Pair: two best buds who are obsessed with TV and quite happy with their situation until a third member comes in to mix things up. [more]

STATION TO STATION at Hawkes Bay Opera House
reviewed by Kirsty van Rijk (Darkly funny thought-provoking journey worth taking) 17 Jun 2011
Darkly funny thought-provoking journey worth taking
International events collide with personal passions as a charismatic television presenter turned religious zealot, Simon, and his beautiful sidekick Veronica, take a mother and son on a rollercoaster ride from Kiwi suburbia to Jerusalem. [more]

SILENT NIGHT at Assembly Room, Hawkes Bay Opera House
reviewed by Kirsty van Rijk 12 Nov 2011
Familiar, authentic and yet unique
Yvette Parsons is faultless in her characterisation of the simple and sad Irene McMunn. Parsons brings her to life but more than that, I’m sure I know this woman. As writer and actor, Parsons manages to create a character we recognise and empathise with, and yet Irene is still unique; original. [more]

SHORTS 2012 at Hawkes Bay Opera House
reviewed by Kirsty van Rijk 12 Apr 2012
Interesting, challenging, engaging and entertaining
Theatre in the provinces is often a mixed bag – we get well financed shows (ballet; comedians; tribute acts) but see less of the 'art' of theatre or the experimental theatre than larger centres because of our small populations. Fortunately for Hawke’s Bay, Theatre Comrades produces Shorts, an annual presentation of three short plays... [more]
