NZ Fringe Festival 09
COLONY! + GRIMM at Wellington Performing Arts Centre
reviewed by John Smythe 7 Feb 2009
Succulent morsels of talent
There is no doubting the brightness, talent and commitment of Long Cloud Youth Theatre, directed by Willem Wassenaar and tutored by Sophie Roberts. These two shows, devised last year, have been revived, revised and revitalised by most of the same performers for the Fringe and they are well worth seeing. [more]

New talent knocking at the stage door
Over the weekend six shows gave a kick start to the theatrical part of the Fringe Festival. Two of them displayed a new and talented generation of actors knocking on the stage door confidently announcing its presence with a couple of shows that the group devised and first presented last year under the guidance of Willem Wassenaar and Sophie Roberts. COLONY! + GRIMM at Wellington Performing Arts Centre

Challenges to bourgeoning skills enjoyable for the audience
The Fringe Festival sees the welcome return season of both Colony! And GRIMM – two short pieces devised by the Long Cloud Youth Theatre group under the capable direction of Willem Wassenaar. Both showcase excellent young talent, although they are far from mere vehicles for exhibiting acting skill. [more]

COLOURFUL SOUL at Mauao Performing Arts Centre, 11 Totara Street
reviewed by Deb Meldrum 11 Nov 2011
An allegorical tale of loss, hope and redemption
This is a very ambitious project and obviously a lot of people have put energy, love and talent into this production, created by Mal Brady (composer) and Duanne Lebo (writer). [more]

COMEDY APOCALYPSE (NZ) at The Basement, Lower Greys Ave
reviewed by Nik Smythe 5 May 2010
Mixed bag, snack-sized
A total of ten cheeky young jokester-lings show off five odd minutes apiece of their comedy chops … The considerable effort it takes just to step up to the mic notwithstanding, the production falls somewhat short of the advertised “like a meteor hitting the earth … spectacular!” [more]

COMEDY CHRISTMAS GALA at SKYCITY Theatre
reviewed by Kate Ward-Smythe 6 Dec 2009
A highly recommended tonic
Comedy Christmas Gala host Brendhan Lovegrove starts the evening as he means to continue: in blistering top form. Setting a relentless pace, and with his up front, no-holes-barred content and style, he deserves the audience’s rolling laughter. We hoot at every gag, yarn and insight (even his trade-mark shocking stuff, when you know you really shouldn’t). [more]

COMEDY CHRISTMAS GALA at Opera House
reviewed by Maryanne Cathro 12 Dec 2009
More good yarns than belittling stuff, luckily
I’d like to start with a few words about this venue. You have to love the Opera House, she’s like a Victorian strumpet in her red and gold finery ... I just want to know why when they refurbished this venue they got rid of the central aisle. There were forty seats in our row. ... It didn’t help that there appeared to be a group booking from the Weak Bladder Society of Wellington occupying the middle of this row. [more]

COMEDY CURE - FACT OR FICTION at Mighty Mighty
reviewed by Thomas LaHood 14 May 2007
Enjoyable if light and a little green
Four heads are better than one, at least that’s so in the case of this troupe of young comedians. Banding together to present their repertoire of short stand-up sets, skits, one-liners and video clips was a clever move, allowing for a pace and dynamic that supports and enhances the individual talents being showcased. Fact or Fiction? You Decide… moves along smoothly and swiftly in the manner of a television skit show, the ever changing focus and varied material allowing a light, absurd tone that is difficult to maintain in a solo performance. COMEDY DIVAS at Embassy Theatre
reviewed by Melody Nixon 20 May 2009
Undercurrent of raunchy nouveau feminism
The mood of Comedy Divas’ gloriously entertaining one night show is held deftly aloft by MC Fiona O’Laughlin. The Australian comedian has a talented mix of women to support her act – Hannah Gadsby, Penny Ashton, Jan Maree and Justine Smith are the stand outs of the stand ups – and though the intention is that O’Laughin ferries in and supports their routines, at the Wellington show we very much ended up with the reverse. COMEDY DIVAS at SKYCITY Theatre

A great night – unless you are slender?
Mother’s Day was the perfect date for the theatre-filling cabaret of chick comedy, The Comedy Divas. There wasn’t an ironing board, recipe book, or pot-scourer in sight – the evening was all about celebrating women and humouring men (however you choose to interpret that). [more]
