JACQUES BREL IS ALIVE AND WELL AND LIVING IN PARIS at Unitec Theatre, Entry 1, Carrington Rd, Mt Albert
reviewed by Lexie Matheson 11 Nov 2012
Bittersweet joy in sublimely human capturing of lost souls and despair
There’s nothing more exciting than being in the audience of a graduation performance and attending the UNITEC School of Performing and Screen Arts Graduating Acting Class 2012 final soiree is absolutely no exception. The fact that it is stunning is merely a bonus. [more]

EIGENGRAU at The Basement, Lower Greys Ave
reviewed by Lexie Matheson 15 Nov 2012
Tight, effective, intelligent and fervent directing of assertive, authentic and raw performances
I’d also go as far as to say that [Skinner is] one of the writers (potent pause) Productions was created for. I started this review talking about how the idea of going to the theatre ‘because it’s good for us’ has changed over the decades but I find that, even when I know I’m going to be emotionally challenged almost to my limit, experiencing a (potent pause) production is always good for me – and usually in ways I wasn’t altogether expecting. KING LEAR at Old Arts Quad of the Maidment Theatre
reviewed by Lexie Matheson 4 Mar 2013
Told with passion and heart, and easily followed
It should be said at the outset that this is a conventional production of the play and a conventional reading of the text, If you come expecting ‘Baz’ Luhrmann interpretative brilliance and eccentricity in staging you’ll be disappointed. Do come though, because, if you’re a Shakespeare nut you won’t be disappointed at all. [more]

HOTEL - A CABARET at Bruce Mason Centre
reviewed by Joanna Page 3 Jul 2011
Phenomenal talents
Takapuna’s Bruce Mason Centre was freezing last night. They could have turned up the air-conditioning, but the chill in the air couldn’t compete with the two women who were on fire on stage. [more]

TIC TIC at Bruce Mason Centre
reviewed by Joanna Page 3 Jul 2011
Transported to a twitchy gay 1970s
In this restrictively politically correct world, only Paul Barrett could make a comedy out of Tourette’s syndrome – and get away with it. Why? Because he has it, and on stage he owns it. Jennifer Ward-Lealand directed the biographical one-man play Barrett wrote with Michelanne Forster and it’s honest as. [more]

TOIL AND TROUBLE at Titirangi Theatre, Lopdell House
reviewed by Joanna Page 29 Sep 2011
Magical script, spectacular lighting and sound
Last night I visited a Wizards’ Guild in Titirangi where I discovered magic and mayhem – although not in equal parts. [more]

PUNK ROCK at The Basement, Lower Greys Ave
reviewed by Joanna Page 29 Mar 2012
Seriously impressive rendition of rich and explosive script
Within a minute of watching from the perimeter of the common room where Simon Stephens’ play unfolds, I was sitting up as straight as a pupil next to the school’s Principal. And that’s how I stayed for the next two hours. [more]

STANDSTILL at Q Theatre Loft, 305 Queen St
reviewed by Joanna Page 31 May 2012
Chasing the elusive dream
Standstill celebrates the majesty in mediocrity and there’s nothing mediocre about this show. Three actors on three treadmills tear through the hour at a phenomenal pace – and I don’t mean their running tempo. [more]

HAIRY MACLARY at The Pumphouse, Takapuna - return season
reviewed by Joanna Page 23 Sep 2012
Captivating and utterly delightful
In through the door and off to our seats went me and my son to our first Tim Bray feat… It was Elliot’s first theatre experience and I had concerns. After all he’s not yet two. Would he be engaged and quiet for the hour? Would he scream the place down? Would we have to abandon the performance? I had nothing to worry about; it wouldn’t have mattered if he was two or eighty-two. [more]

THE DRAGON OF AN ORDINARY FAMILY at The Pumphouse, Takapuna
reviewed by Joanna Page 21 Apr 2013
Magically marvellous adaptation
Under Tim Bray’s direction, Todd Emerson, Elizabeth Tierney and Aaron Ward bring the Belsaki family to life. It’s left to Sam Berkley and Aruna Po-Ching to transform themselves into all the other characters in the story, which they do effortlessly and with subtle, quick costume changes. [more]
