CORNER 4AM AND CUBA at BATS
reviewed by Laurie Atkinson (The Dominion Post) 14 Apr 2007
Theatrical memorial to a murdered teen
Corner 4am & Cuba is a memorial to a 14 year-old boy, Jeff Whittington, who was murdered in Inverlochy Place, near Aro St in 1999. The director of this hour-long piece of collaborative theatre has said Jeff’s brutal murder just needs to be remembered. [more]

Refreshing, relevant theatre
Portraying a relatively recent ‘real life’ murder on stage is a gutsy thing to do, more so when it’s the beating to death of a 14 year old for nothing more than being a little different and in the wrong place at the wrong time ... [more]

Sensitive but shocking
In this powerful and moving piece of drama presented by the Wheelbarrow Group, Ronald Trifero Nelson directs a cast of eight young people to explore a seemingly pointless death and offer theatre as therapy. It contains violent content that may offend, and will certainly disturb, and notices in the foyer recommend counselling services to those who want to talk about issues raised by the performance. CORNER DIARY at BATS - Out Of Site - Cnr Cuba & Dixon
reviewed by Fiona McNamara 23 Feb 2013
Hilariously genuine
Four performers, MC’d by the self-titled Shame Shaman, Jean Sergent, share the deepest, darkest, strangest (and in the case of this weekend’s theme, straightest) moments of their past selves, by reading their own diary entries, love letters and fan mail to seventy people who have shown up to spend their Friday night revelling in some Schadenfreude. CORNERSHOP CONFESSIONS at Herald Theatre, Aotea Centre, The Edge
reviewed by Kate Ward-Smythe 17 May 2006
Under-developed and ill-prepared
Even the most experienced of actors struggle to pull off the many roles required in this one-person format. At times the task seemed beyond Tarun, as some characters were not fully formed, and others seemed clichéd. A notable exception was Tarun’s Grandmother, where he mastered some wonderful tongue-in-cheek comedy. [more]

CORNERSHOP CONFESSIONS at Maidment
reviewed by Nik Smythe 9 Oct 2008
Amusingly pointed
The premise is daringly predictable: a migrant Indian family dealing with their children coming of age, with as many stereotypical race/gender/age gags as you might expect. An effective set design ... strong audio and visual effects ... and above all a versatile and spirited performance from Tarun Mohanbhai, also writer and producer, combine to make Cornershop Confessions a worthwhile watch. CORONATION STREET ON STAGE! at St James Theatre
reviewed by John Smythe 10 Apr 2013
Many memorable moments somewhat marred
Each hits the mark remarkably with certain characters; all bring focus, energy, humour and good timing to the sketches. What a shame, then, that all the star-status hoopla has focused on William Roach, who trots out the laziest performance I have ever seen on a professional stage. [more]

Exercise in reduction thrills fans
A confession: I haven’t watched a complete episode of Coronation Street since Ena Sharples and Elsie Tanner were the queen bees of the Rovers Return. The few bits I have seen since then have been when I have been channel hopping. [more]

Take a trip down memory lane to Coro St, chook
My co-reviewer, Iris, has been watching Coronation Street since the first episode 52 years ago, and could be dragged away from her telly for the stage show only because she had Coro on auto record. "But I'm not a fanatic!" she says. [more]

Coro remembered and mocked panto style
Love it or loathe it, it's here. With an undeniable – and, in some areas, enviable – rich history of 63 years, two thousand storylines, 92 marriages, 156 deaths and too many to mention affairs, births, abductions, kidnappings and pints pulled and downed, it looks as if it's here to stay, on our screens at least.
