COUNTING THE WAYS at Gryphon
reviewed by Maryanne Cathro 8 Apr 2010
Engaging, moving, provoking, satisfying
I love Edward Albee’s plays: the bitter sweet toying with words as if they were alternately or randomly even; chocolates and razor blades. He is as essentially American as Truman Capote or John Updike, all bringing an irrepressible sense of storytelling to their work. [more]

COUNTING THE WAYS at Gryphon
reviewed by Laurie Atkinson 10 Apr 2010
Playful theatrical sonnet portrays ageing love story
The title of Edward Albee’s rarely performed play Counting the Ways refers to Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s most famous sonnet in her Sonnets from the Portuguese. (“How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.”) [more]

COURSE RELATED COSTS at The Basement Studio, Lower Greys Ave
reviewed by Melisa Martin 30 May 2012
Chaos, wit, everyday dialogue, tears, laughter, shock, fear and drama flawlessly combined
Set in a typical student flat, three flatmates come up with a plan to cook top-grade methamphetamine for a sociopathic crime boss, for six months, for a massive cash return; as if being a student weren’t already hard enough! [more]

Drugs are bad, mmmkay?
You just know that things are going to come crashing down in Course Related Costs, the only questions are how, and how badly. [more]

COVERT IMPROV NIGHT at Musgrove Studio, Maidment Theatre
reviewed by Nik Smythe 10 Sep 2010
Good for more than a few chuckles
It’s a quiet Thursday evening on the second of four nights in the Musgrove Studio where thirteen fledgling improvisation artists compete in a series of events in a tournament of the style otherwise known as Theatresports (where the rights to use that title are possessed). [more]

COVERT IMPROV NIGHT (NZ) at Musgrove Studio, Maidment Theatre
reviewed by Caoilinn Hughes 1 May 2010
Tied up in ropes and told to swim
It’s rookie improv night at the Maidment’s Musgrove Studio: the final night tonight (May 1st) and it’s sold out! Rightly so, as the graduates of the Art of Improvisation workshop series deliver an energetic, slapdash hour of fun. [more]

COW & FOLD at Gallagher Concert Chamber, Wel Academy of Performing Arts, Waikato University
reviewed by Gail Pittaway 2 May 2012
Bovine absurdism and a tragedy of manners
Silly or true? Through the unpredictable action and laughs, which are many in Cow/Fold, runs a strong theme about caring and listening. [more]

COWBOY MOUTH AND LOVE IT UP at The SNAKE PIT, 33 High Street
reviewed by Matt Baker (Theatre Scenes - Auckland Theatre Blog) 14 Sep 2012
A Bittersweet Mouthful
Cowboy Mouth was once described as co-writer Sam Shephard’s ‘most thinly-veiled autobiography.’ However, his resultant abandonment of the production prior to the second night’s performance (he starred alongside his co-writer and lover at the time, Patti Smith) indicates that perhaps the piece was less of a thin veil, and more of a deluge of emotionally packed stream of conscious writing that hit Shephard too close to home during performance. COWBOY MOUTH AND LOVE IT UP at The SNAKE PIT, 33 High Street

Food for thought in trans-dimensional rock ’n’ roll absurdism
The multi-faceted aura that emerges under Madhan’s adventurous direction suggests a kind of psychedelic prism, where confusion between the realities of the actors and characters is deliberately concocted to evince a questioning uneasiness, such as with the actors’ faltering accents. [more]

CRACKER INTERNATIONAL COMEDY SHOWCASE at SKYCITY Theatre
reviewed by Venus Stephens 6 May 2009
Worth the air and carbon points they clock up
Comedy shows should have a harassment warning on the tickets, to read like this: “Do not sit within the 1st three rows of the stage. Doing so will result in hazardous use of your personal life being used as comic fodder”. [more]
