A Fly on the Wall is a fast-paced, student-focused comedy that brings the chaos of real life to the stage in a series of hilarious, interconnected sketches. Blurring the line between reality and absurdity, the show captures the highs, lows, and downright bizarre moments of everyday life—exaggerated just enough to hit close to home.

Each night features a brand-new episode with fresh storylines, making every performance a unique experience. However, like a sitcom unfolding live, the sketches weave together to form an overarching narrative across the three nights. Audiences can enjoy any night as a standalone performance, but those who attend multiple nights will uncover deeper connections between the characters and events.

Expect everything from a pregnancy scare spiraling into unexpected chaos, a missing cat turning an apartment upside down, painfully awkward family interactions, and funerals that are anything but traditional. With sharp writing, quick-paced humor, and a dynamic cast, A Fly on the Wall delivers a theatrical experience that’s as unpredictable as life itself.

Impressive debut, well worth a look

Review by Kate Will-Tofia 14th Mar 2025

A Fly on the Wall is the impressive debut production from Firefly Theatre Collective, blending the ‘New-Every-Night’ novelty of an improv show with the precision and well-timed comedic beats of a sitcom. Each performance presents one of three episodes that build upon one another, contributing to an overarching plot that, for now, is a mystery. Filled with sharp, and often surprising humour, the play cleverly reinvents familiar plots, misunderstandings and gross-out physical comedy, delivering fresh and hilarious situations.

The show opens with a scene instantly recognisable to a Dunedin student audience: a flat in disarray. Amid discarded V cans and the remnants of a party—or just the aftermath of 20-something sloppiness—the minimalistic set leaves room for the enormous talent and charisma of the cast. Each actor embraces their role with a sincerity that grounds the silliness, even when the absurdity of the situations threatens to veer into the ridiculous.

The cast of characters includes Stacey (Ailish Wilson), a no-nonsense, confrontational student, and her boyfriend Darren (Monique van der Westhuizen), a yapping, hi-vis-wearing, headache of a person. Darren’s friends include Mike (Ethan Bremner), an alcoholic drama queen, and the ever-endearing but dense Dave (Ben Sidon).

The script, written by 2025 Dunedin Emerging Artist Award winner Jackson Rosie, is bothexcellent and exciting. As mentioned before, the comedy is delightfully silly and incredibly inventive, delivering plenty of memorable moments that leave you giggling hours after the performance. However, while the play’s episodic structure is interesting, the absence of a clear resolution — likely intended as a transition to the next night’s episode — leaves the audience feeling somewhat unsure, and wondering, “Is that it for tonight?” This lack of closure, while likely intentional, does seem to detract from the overall flow and satisfaction of the single night experience.

Under Ruzél Stegen’s direction, A Fly on the Wall is a perfect blend of chaos and control. The decisions made throughout the production ensure that the action remains lively, engaging, and never feels stagnant. The energy between the cast members is palpable, especially in their impeccable comedic timing and animated physicality. There’s a chemistry that can’t be denied. Each actor feeds off of the others, creating an electric atmosphere that makes this production alive and unpredictable.

A Fly On the Wall is a stellar introduction to Firefly Theatre Company. The strength of this show lies not only in the script and performances, but also in the seamless collaboration between all those involved. Every aspect, from the direction to the performances to the technical elements, contributes to creating a cohesive and dynamic experience. It’s clear that the entire team, from the actors to the crew have a synergy that makes A Fly on the Wall well worth a watch.
