Heartfelt comedy, brilliantly funny

Review by Reuben Crimp 23rd Mar 2025

Gerard Dougherty is back, returning to the Fringe with yet another exceptionally funny comedy show, Hang in There! A show nothing short of brilliant, deeply introspective, and undeniably authentic. His preternatural, almost ungodly comedic talents can only be explained through some Faustian bargain. It’s like watching someone juggle flaming chainsaws while casually admitting their most closely guarded secrets with heartfelt sincerity.

Throughout Hang in There!, Dougherty weaves a compelling narrative that immerses the audience deeply in his personal experiences. He openly discusses his own struggles balancing life as a young comedian, exploring adulthood, parenting, mental health, and even men’s fertility issues contextualized satirically against geopolitical conflicts.

Dougherty’s stories capture the chaotic reality of parenting a spirited toddler, effortlessly capturing moments of genuine insight with heartfelt reflections on fatherhood. He poignantly highlights the delicate balance between everyday frustrations and unconditional love.

Ultimately, Hang in There! is a celebration of life’s beautiful messiness, the small yet significant moments of joy, absurdity, and struggle we all share. Dougherty’s natural delivery and willingness to delve into deeper emotional territory makes this show a profoundly human experience filled with laughter, reflection, and warmth.

Come for the ceaseless laughter, stay for the thoughtful storytelling that Gerard Dougherty naturally embodies. Insightful, refreshing, and deeply touching. If you missed his show, I’m certain he’ll return in 2026. Until then, hang in there!
