Engaging storytelling delightfully rebellious with exquisite live music
Review by Melanie Stewart 11th Mar 2025
Jessie and Other Stories, written and performed by Mary Glaisyer, is a delightful exploration of life’s moments that resonate with the audience. Accompanied by the talented Juliet Ayre on violin, Glaisyer captivates us with her storytelling prowess, sharing anecdotes that range from her childhood tea-drinking lessons to heartfelt tributes recalling the grace, charm and accomplishments of notable past residents of Nelson.
Glaisyer’s ability to engage her audience is superb. Each story is carefully structured, revealing different facets of narrative style. She reminds us of some past Nelsonians and shares little fragments of their lives that were significant in illustrating their personalities. She tells a tale about how her tea party was derailed, she shares the life of her dear mother-in-law, Jessie, and her eccentricities, and her concluding story is a tongue-in-cheek wrap up of every Country Calendar episode ever.
The stories are interspersed with the exquisite violin playing of Juliet Ayer who plays a diverse selection of pieces from Charlie Chaplin to Rachmaninov. It is a wonderful addition to Glaisyer’s storytelling and I enjoy the lively finale jingle which summarises her stories into one song, perfectly encapsulating the spirit of the show.
Notably Glaisyer began her performing journey at 74. She calls it her rebellion from an upbringing that relegated the performing arts to the bottom of the heap. This third fringe show is a testament to her talent and courage, and one can only hope she continues this delightful rebellion for years to come.
