LIMINALITY

110 Courtenay Place, Te Aro, Wellington

11/02/2021 - 28/02/2021

Production Details

Liminality: a state of transition between one stage and the next; a threshold between two states.

Liminality is a light-box installation that explores the blur between the digital space and physical space, creating a hyper digital installation of abstract forms, bold colour and light.

Situated in an empty commercial space on Courtenay Place, Liminality exists in a grey area between the public space and private space and explores how art can occupy the public sphere in new ways.

The installation explores multiple layers of transformation with the works acting as bridges between the digital and physical. Liminality provides the space to contemplate how these digital forms occupy the public space when given a physical presence and how the viewer perceives this occupation in relation to themselves. Liminality also provides a place to reflect on the exponential rate at which we are adopting the digital space into our lives.

Daniel Metcalfe is a visual artist based in Wellington, New Zealand. He has been involved in a variety of solo, collaborative and group exhibitions in public institutions, dealer galleries, artist run spaces and public spaces.

Daniel’s practice explores the relationship between the digital space and physical space, creating hyper-digital environments that engulf the viewer in abstract forms, bold colour and light. Through this he aims to provide a space for the viewer to contemplate the exponential rate at which we are incorporating the digital space into our lives.

Daniel chooses a wide array of mediums and processes to explore this relationship. Sometimes this is explored in a calm, meditative manner and other times it takes on a more chaotic feeling. Past works of his have consisted of Vinyl on Light-boxes, Looped Digital Projection, Vinyl Drawings, Moving Image and painting.

Bold, bright, and intense

Review by Ines Maria Almeida 15th Feb 2021

Don’t worry. I had to look up the meaning of liminality too, and I’m not ashamed to admit it. It’s a noun, albeit an esoteric one. Liminality is a state of transition between one stage and the next; a threshold between two states. Well, that sounds familiar. After the year and a bit we’ve all had, I think we know this liminality rather intimately.

Dreamed up and brought to life by visual artist Daniel Metcalfe, Liminality is a light-box installation in an empty commercial space, smack-dab on Courtney Place, that gives us all a peek into the space between digital and physical. This is classic Metcalf – his practice has always explored the relationship between the digital space and physical space, inspiring his audience to stop and think about just how fast we let all things digital weave their way into their lives. It’s not for the faint of heart.

And the Courtney Place part is deliberate. Metcalf’s oeuvre explores how art can occupy the public sphere in new and daring ways. Why shouldn’t there be art on a strip known for drunken debauchery. Because of its open hours, you won’t have to push past a pack of drunken first year Vic Uni students to enter a world you’d expect from the likes of the City Gallery, but it’d be worth fighting the fray.* With the lack of beats coming from next door, you can let yourself slip into a sweet contemplative spot. Level up and turn your phone off to truly take the time that Metcalfe is giving you to think about just how much we give up to stay so connected.

Liminality is bold, bright, and intense to say the least, so brace yourself for a different kind of art experience. I won’t tell you exactly what I see, because I don’t want to spoil it for you, and besides, you might see it differently. It runs until Feb 28, from 11am-6pm at 110 Courtenay Place.
