A space where stories matter and music brings us together

Review by Tracey Blake 18th Oct 2025

As part of the Taranaki Arts Festival (TAFT) Reimagine Festival, the 4th Wall Theatre is transformed into a haven of music, connection, and unapologetic queerness with Little Gay In – a vibrant and heartfelt show created by the gorgeous Jason Parker.

Featuring a stunning lineup of local and national talent – including Taranaki’s own Livi Whitehead, returning home to join fellow musicians Juliet McLean & Missie Moffat, along with the sensational Ariel Wose from Tāmaki Makaurau – this cabaret-meets-talk-show event is a true celebration of music, identity and community.

From the very first note, the audience knows they are in for a treat. Jason Parker, described as “viral”, opens and closes the night with flair, sincerity and his signature blend of humour and heart. Infectious in both energy and talent, Parker’s presence lights up the room and sparkles more than his pink sequinned suit. His commitment to showcasing queer joy and storytelling is refreshing and deeply moving – a true breath of fresh air for Taranaki audiences.

Structured like a talk show, Little Gay In interweaves candid interviews with stunning live music performances. The result is an evening full of tenderness, laughter and honesty.

It’s said, “You need to find your tribe” – and this night, this show, this community feels like home. And as a straight 50 something woman, I am fully connected, engaged and blown away, by not only the talent, but the celebration of connection on stage and in the audience.

Juliet McLean delivers one of the evening’s most touching moments with a raw and soulful ballad about life and love after separation. Set to a karaoke backing track of Simply Red’s ‘If You Don’t Know Me By Now’, McLean’s duet with Parker has us singing along but it is her first two songs that warm our hearts and bring truth and emotion.

Missie Moffat continues this with their effortless blend of warmth, sincerity and sheer talent, as they captivate the audience. “I could’ve listened to them play for hours,” says one audience member. Their songwriting and performance style leaves a lasting impression.

And then comes Ariel Wose – a young vocal powerhouse from Auckland whose range and emotional depth astonishes everyone in the room. Showcased superbly within the format, she leaves no doubt that she’s a star on the rise.

Accompanied by talented guitarist Livy Whitehead, Parker entertains us with acoustic flair before popping us into a great final dance set. He brings out the best in his guests – and in his audience. His openness, depth and “outright queerness” are met with roaring applause and heartfelt appreciation.

TAFT has once again outdone itself, curating a space where stories matter and where music brings us together.

Here’s hoping Jason Parker and this magical lineup – will grace our stages again soon.
