Production Details

This project is made up of a series of four contemporary dance films that are a dialogue between sound, movement and light. Inspired by the different reactions each individual person feels to music and sound. The four films on a continuous loop are diverse but have similar constructs. Each film has a different energy and uses improvised dance movements to explore the surrounding spaces. The films, all shot in East London enabled Lui-Fakaotimanava and Martin to explore their fascination with light as well as featuring their unique neighbourhood of Poplar where they currently reside. The two artists have a history of creating works together and they are continuously looking to push the boundaries of creativity in dance and film.

Conor Lui-Fakaotimanava and Emma Martin work closely, to explore the potentials of light, sound and movement on film. They have been long time collaborators committed to exploring new territories for their respective art forms.

Their dance film Queen of Shades is one of four short films presented at Poplar Gallery in March. It is presented on a continuous loop as part of a walk through exhibition that pays tribute to their neighbourhood in East London and places them as artists within this community.

Martin utilizes her craft as a finely honed improviser to create movement in response to various stimuli, whilst Lui-Fakaotimanava manipulates light and films.

She dances to a whimsical classical piano piece, her body undulates and pauses, authentically responding the impulses of the moment and the environment. Her silhouette curves and flows in a short work with a stylish aesthetic. At times there are unusual disruptions which add depth such as a repeating walking pattern which is an interesting way to end the film. These two artists are a unique addition to the East London creative landscape. It will be good to see how their work develops in the future.
