NZ Fringe Festival 2023

Production Details

Presented by GEORGE FENN FAN CLUB

The enigmatic Sexy Ghost Boy (George Fenn) returns with this satirical, supernatural sequel lampooning the lifestyles of the rich and famous.

A new performance by unpredictable big brain comedy morsel George Fenn (Wanted: Blaze of Glory, How to Apology, Router Sidewalker). The show grinds together Clown and Burlesque to create a decadent 1950’s inspired wet dream all without uttering a word aloud.

Imagine if Wolf of Wall Street fellated Madmen in a Golf Cart as it careened into a Yacht wrecked on a sandbar.

This show has been performed once before, at Little Andromeda in Christchurch – it will be the first Wellington showing.

Out of this world cocktail of immersive storylines parodying the lifestyles of the rich and famous

Review by Talia Carlisle 24th Feb 2023

If booty shaking and bread fights weren’t on your Fringe checklist, then add them quick and shimmy down to Cambridge Terrace to watch George Fenn’s Sexy Golf Boy before they putt out of town.

On until Saturday, Sexy Golf Boy is an indelible and decadent display of comical immersion theatre, where it is hard to tell who is having more fun.

There’s the enthusiastic audience actually falling out of their chairs (or standing on them since gravity and reality are optional here it seems) and then Sexy Golf Boy, played by George, who has to stop themselves from laughing at the beautiful chaos in this strange sexy golf world we find ourselves in on a dreary Wellington Wednesday night.

There are plenty of umbrellas provided if in need of protection from the weather elements inside the venue – such as popping champagne, bread bombs, and flying corks (which apparently make for reusable butt plugs – we are all about sustainability here).

Then there’s the famous food throwing championship game, where no one knows how to play but everyone throws themselves into it, with a podium award ceremony to finish what we imagine must be the strangest part of the show, however there are more surprises to come …

Described as the supernatural sequel to George’s Sexy Ghost Boy, I don’t find anything particularly supernatural or natural about the experience, since reality sails out the door before even entering the white and curtained stage set up above Sweet Axe Throwing Company on Cambridge Terrace.

The clever use of space, props, costumes, a minimal set and producer Matt Blomfield’s DJ skills create the perfect setting for whatever cabaret-clown-comedy-catastrophe we are watching, and we are captivated by our silent and sassy ringmaster George Fenn.

The high flying venue – named Whisky and Wood, is a truly beautiful backdrop to this cocktail of immersive storylines parodying the lifestyles of the rich and famous. These include every celebrity’s statutory ghost ship sailing, rewarding oneself for throwing away food instead of eating it, and how to create makeshift champagne glasses in 3 seconds flat.

If you like smooth jazz and a fine dining vibe, plus drinking champagne out of the finest plastic in town … If you’re a fan of booty shorts, indoor picnics, and the high fashion world meets miniature golf attire, or perhaps need a new sport to outblow the Windy Wellington weather … If you’re not sure which Fringe show to invite your flatmate, your colleague, a lover or friend … Tee yourself up to see Sexy Golf Boy for entertainment which is out of this world.
