Created and performed by comedian – Takashi Wakasugi

Japanese comedy boy Takashi thinks stand-up comedy is similar to samurai. You are always alone on the stage. Kill or die. Better to be sharp and quick but also think about the space and the distance. It looks simple but is complicated. Thinking a lot but pretend to think nothing. Sensitive and timid like a cat but solid and fearless like a large cloud.

Please don’t miss any strokes of his jokes and souls.

A distinctive and likeable comic voice

Review by Deborah Eve Rea 08th May 2025

Takashi Wakasugi’s Comedy Samurai is a quiet gem of a show — low-key, self-aware and full of understated charm. Performing to a friendly crowd at Fringe Bar, Wakasugi brings a gentle, disarming energy that makes for an enjoyable and refreshingly unforced evening.

Wakasugi’s material centres around cultural contrasts, poking fun at both Japanese and Western quirks. His reflections on language, food and daily habits are delivered with a dry wit and a playful sense of confusion. He doesn’t push too hard for laughs. Instead he lets the humour sit naturally in the space, trusting the audience to come along for the ride.

He delivers an engaging mix of politeness and slyness, and his willingness to acknowledge when something feels a little odd or awkward only adds to the charm.

Wakasugi’s Comedy Samurai offers a distinctive and likeable comic voice and is well worth seeking out.
