Each brings their own rhythm, charm, and power to provoke laughter

Review by Tracey Blake 15th Jun 2025

It may be Friday the 13th, but there is nothing unlucky about the night of belly laughs and bright lights that unfolds at the TSB Showplace. As part of the Right Royal Cabaret Festival, the Taranaki Comedy Gala delivers a sparkling night of homegrown hilarity – a smorgasbord of the best comedic talent Aotearoa has to offer.

Hosting the night is none other than Jeremy Corbett, of 7 Days fame, who takes to the stage with the ease and warmth of an old friend. His MC style feels like banter at a backyard BBQ – relaxed, cheeky and full of clever jabs tailored to the local crowd. His pacing and presence sets the tone for a night that feels both polished and delightfully unpredictable.

The lineup that follows is nothing short of stellar. Josh Thomson’s offbeat anecdotes on parenting (and sick kids) resonate with anyone who’s ever tried to maintain dignity amidst domestic chaos. His quick wit shines even brighter when bouncing off a particularly vocal audience member – proving once again that live comedy is all about those unscripted moments.

Lana Walters’ brilliantly awkward energy hits like a comedic gut punch – sharp, honest, and painfully funny particularly around her growing family.

Joe Daymond brings swagger and smarts, weaving cultural commentary into a powerhouse set that has the audience fully engaged from start to finish.

Liv McKenzie’s life as a single resonates with many as we, at times, battle whether it’s socially acceptable to laugh or not. Her truthfulness is hilarious and honesty, infectious.

Laser Kiwi take things to an entirely different level. Their surreal physical comedy – part performance art, part fever dream – is hilariously absurd. Who knew martinis and interpretive dance could pair so well?

Brendon Green’s gentle, introspective comedy adds a beautiful beat change – understated, but with a lasting impact on what not to do on a third date.

Kajun Brooking and Callum Wagstaff are two rising stars whose opposing styles keep things fresh: Kajun’s expressive delivery is electric, while Callum’s awkward physicality and tales of shopping in Hawera have us doubled over.

But it is the slow-talking cowboy from Cripple Creek, Colorado, Wilson Dixon, who truly steals the show. Deadpan and delightfully dry, his storytelling – strummed out alongside gentle guitar twangs – is masterclass-level comedy. Having interviewed Dixon for my podcast Behind the Velvet Curtain, I knew he’d be a highlight. He doesn’t disappoint.

The Taranaki Comedy Gala is more than a show – it is a celebration of New Zealand’s comedic voices, each with their own rhythm, charm, and power to provoke laughter. A brilliant night. Let’s hope it becomes a festival fixture.
