'All ages' production delivers amusement, entertainment, and beautiful messages

Review by Rose Muollo‑Gray 30th Sep 2025

Sometimes, all you need to do is laugh, no matter how young or old you are.

I am having the absolute privilege of watching The Early Early Late Show at The Court Theatre in Christchurch. Described as a scriptless comedy, it is perfectly curated and put together as a ‘late night’-type show for children. While this could be a unique experience for an adult – to go to a kids’ show, with children as the primary demograph and audience participants – surprisingly, I am not the only adult here without kids. There is a range of people here who are interacting and joining in on the entertainment of all age ranges and genders. It is less of a show ‘for kids’ and feels more like an ‘all ages’ production.

The Early Early Late Show can be best compared to The Wiggles. Being a scriptless comedy, the performers relying on interactions with the audience. The actors come with all different types of props and a living room-styled production stage. There are four people on stage, bouncing and improv-ing off each other, as well as a piano man, who is soundtracking the entire show on the fly. What makes these performers so endearing are the moments they break character because you can see they clearly look like they are enjoying themselves. This goes hand-in-hand with the audience being constantly amused and entertained by these performers.

There isn’t much I can elaborate on because every show will be different for anyone watching it. However, in this performance there is a section near the end of the show where they bring someone on to act out their dream job. A girl, who wants to be a professional BMX racer, is able to live out her full fantasy in front of an audience cheering her on and performers encouraging her fantasies. An inner part of me feels so touched, I almost cry, because something like that as a kid could be life-changing in the best way.

There are beautiful messages about supporting each other, empowerment, following your dreams and living fearlessly. It’s a fabulous production; please go get tickets before the show is over – you will not regret it.

I give this production 9.5/10 yarn haters.
