The kind of comedian you feel at ease with
Review by Gin Mabey 15th May 2025
The tiny room at the top of BATS Theatre has a warm buzz as soon as TimProvise greets us. Nothing but a stool and a mic, it’s all he needs. TimProvise takes us through his life from childhood to today, mischief on the streets of South Auckland, his family (I love Aunty Paru), and the repeating incidents where his Māori-ness was questioned.
Even as a Pākehā I remember the attitudes when I was at Intermediate: kids in kapahaka who looked pākehā were laughed at, and people did Pukana for a laugh. I remember the conversations around “How Māori are you?”, “What percentage are you?”, “they’re not even really Māori!”. And that wasn’t even THAT long ago. TimProvise’s playful style brings home the first hand experience of this with ease and warmth while not compromising the rawness of truth.
He switches to a red light when he hits us with the real raw jokes he lets us know his Mum is horrified by. This is a cool way to manipulate the space and guide us into a new narrative vibe.
TimProvise is the kind of comedian you feel at ease with, because he’s got it under control. He feels like a mate who is the best at telling stories , not an easy feat.
Go see it!
