Wellington’s comedy scene is bursting at the seams. So when a new gig lands, it needs to pack a punch and carve out its own space. Enter Triple Threat – a monthly(ish) night at BATS that absolutely delivers.
Austin Harrison and Nina Hogg of Mon Platon Productions bring a format that is a breath of fresh air. Instead of the usual lineup roulette, where you brace for the cringe or the offensive, Triple Threat promises quality and charm every time. Knowing these producers, you trust the lineup will stay sharp and steer clear of tired sexist or racist gags that just bait awkward pity laughs.
This makes Triple Threat a rare beast: a destination comedy show you actually want to brave a blustery Wellington Wednesday night for.
Harrison’s hosting strikes the perfect balance: no MC hogging the mic, no grandstanding. Just warm, friendly welcomes and a few light jabs to gently warm the room before handing the stage to the real stars. He knows his comedians will do the heavy lifting on the laughs, and he serves his role with perfectly timed charm.
Hogg brings a level of technical precision that’s often overlooked in small comedy shows. The lighting and sound don’t just function; they elevate, spotlighting each act with finesse.
Lesa Macleod-Whiting kicks off with her signature white-girl-brunch vibe. She’s warm, chatty, effortlessly funny. It’s like catching up with your funniest friend over mimosas. You can’t help but feel like you’re in on the joke. Macleod-Whiting makes the audience feel right at home.
Meaghan Fisher brings fresh queer comedy that’s anything but recycled. As someone who’s exactly the target audience, I love seeing more representation on stage. Her jokes are clever, nuanced, and new. Fisher is on the rise, and I can’t wait to see where she goes next.
This is Trent H Baumann’s final show before he leaves Wellington, and his set is a bittersweet greatest-hits collection from his time in the city, delivered with the same reliable punch. Baumann, I do have a question for you: where are you going, Birdmann? Wellington’s going to miss you, and I hope you fly back soon.
Overall, Triple Threat is a solid night out. The real winning formula here is the format: three strong comedians, thoughtfully curated for quality over quantity. Paired with sharp production and an inclusive, welcoming vibe. Triple Threat stands out as a reliably great night in Wellington’s crowded comedy calendar. With Harrison and Hogg at the helm, mixing up the lineups and keeping standards high, it’s one show I’ll be coming back to (and recommending to friends).
