Montecristo - Upstairs, Auckland

25/04/2015 - 16/05/2015

NZ International Comedy Festival 2015

Production Details

Back from Cripple Creek Colorado for a visit, armed with a brand new show, NZ’s favourite country music legend, Wilson Dixon, is back For the First Time. Again.  Running from the 25th April – 16th May at Montecristo, Wilson Dixon for the First Time. Again. promises to follow in its prequel’s tracks to a sell-out season.

With his messy divorce to Maureen now firmly behind him (or rather beside him – Maureen is still living next door with his neighbour Dwayne). Wilson has officially moved on and has fallen in love. Things are good, as long as Maureen stays on her side of the hedge, and Wilson’s large extended family can bring themselves to accept someone “from outta town”, and how will his angry horse “Andrew” and his dog “Biscuit” react to a new lady in the house?

Wilson Dixon‘s star has not stopped rising since he won the supreme New Zealand International Comedy Festival FRED Award in 2010. Wilson took the UK scene by storm playing seasons at Edinburgh Fringe, Glasgow Comedy Festival and the Leicester Comedy Festival – to name but a few.

Dixon has worked with comedy greats, Stewart Lee, Stephen K Amos and David O’Doherty and was nominated for the coveted Chortle Comedy award. Wilson is a New Zealand International Comedy Festival’s Comedy Gala favourite and he looks forward to bringing his own dead-pan style of killer one-liners and great musical comedy back to NZ – this time he is in love… will it mean a more mellow Wilson? Is that even possible?

“Simply sensational and utterly unmissable” –  tvnz.co.nz

“Deadpan delivery of some of the funniest songs you’ll ever hear…” – Time Out, UK

“…the kind of fella who could make you laugh ’til the cows come home…Dixon’s deadpan patter is gut-bustlingly funny, but it’s his beautifully crafted songs that really impress.”  – The Scotsman

Brilliant parody

Review by Dione Joseph 30th Apr 2015

‘Wilson Dixon’ is the ingenious and unforgettable creation of [suddenly we are being asked not to reveal the comedian’s true identity, having done so since 2007].

Oozing his typical charm and occasional acerbic humour, his drawling tones chronicle the decision of his ex-wife Maureen to leave him for their neighbour Dwayne … and why. He also charts the perils of hitch hiking and some rather hilarious anecdotes about Andrew, who seems to be an arrogant character especially considering he’s a horse.

Laced throughout is a subtle parody of Americans and their trademark Americanism but done with such cleverness that it never veers into caricature or stereotype.

Dixon also acknowledges that country music might not be the best genre for protest songs and cites how certain notorious names severely limit the scope for rhymes.

But the highlight of the evening is the songs: a tad romantic and nostalgic but entirely appropriate, particularly one about loving your other half on a highly conditional basis.

Wilson Dixon is a brilliant parody and always welcome on the comedy circuit.
