Carol Brown (Pākeha-Irish New Zealander) is an artist-scholar and artistic director of Carol Brown Dances.  Her work straddles academic, community and professional contexts and is renowned for its transdisciplinary reach. After completing one of the first practice-led Phds in Dance at the University of Surrey, Carol was invited to become Choreographer in Residence at the Place Theatre London. Carol Brown Dances have presented over 50 works for screen, stage and site and been presented at major festivals including Brighton Festival, Dance Umbrella, Ars Electronica and Roma Europa. Carol’s work has been recognized through a Jerwood Prize and the Ludwig Forum International Prize. She has taught at ImPulsTanz, The Place and Centre for Performance Research and lectured widely including at the University of Surrey, Brighton University, Trinity Labanand LSCD. She has written numerous articles on choreography and dance research and co-edited Undisciplining Dance with Alys Longley. Formerly a Reader in Choreography at Roehampton University London, and Associate Professor at the University of Auckland where she founded Choreographic Research Aotearoa, in 2019 she was appointed Head of Dance and Professor of Choreography at the Victorian College of Arts, University of Melbourne. In 2025 she is returning to Aotearoa to take up the Caroline Plummer Community Arts Fellowship at the University of Otago, Ōtākou Whakaihu Waka.
