Confident and charismatic improvisers

Review by Hannah Smith 08th Oct 2010

BATS is full to bursting for the first appearance (Ever! In the Southern Hemisphere!) of Canadian improv duo Crumbs Comedy, and the audience of improvisers and aficionados are not disappointed by an hour of loose-goose laugh-inducing improv.

Stephen and Lee work together with the ease of people who’ve been doing it for years. After getting a couple of general ask-fors (dinosaurs and vet/nurse) they embark on a tall tale that takes them from a veterinarian clinic through primordial jungle, western saloon and home again, on the back of a pony called Thunder.

As you can maybe tell, you kind of had to be there.

The movie pastiche moments work particularly well, as does the entirety of the land of the dinosaurs. Awesome. They do have a tendency to default into bickering with each other – this is funny at first, and justified within the world of the scenes, but could certainly get tiresome if carried too far.

The style is looser than most of the other offerings in the Improv Fest: two guys, two chairs, two ask-fors and that’s pretty much it. But Stephen and Lee don’t seem to need anymore than this, they’re confident and charismatic improvisers who fill the stage with ease.

If you like Improv you will like this. Last show is tonight and if last night’s crowd is anything to go by you should probably book tickets.
