Youthful passion, dedication and enthusiasm

Review by Emily Napolitano 26th Sep 2015

Outstanding Feet is brought to us by Dance and Performance’s Dance Ambassador’s programme. It is a chance for high school dancers to showcase their diverse talent and passionate discipline, and gain valuable professional experience into the bargain. This year’s show features the strongest participation to date, with contributions from eleven high schools across Canterbury.

Throughout the year these young dancers learn from their dance teachers and professional choreographers, and also have the chance to create their own routines. As a result of this wide range of talent and strengths, the evening runs the gamut from hip-hop inspired contemporary to contemporary ballet to jazz funk.

Most pieces are minimally set, with the occasional use of chairs and tables as well as use of on screen projections. Kaipoi High’s zombie-themed theatre dance makes the most use of props, while Papanui High effectively utilises the screen to project the last words of black American victims killed by police officers in the soberly challenging #blacklivesmatter.

A definite crowd favourite is Kaipoi High’s China Concept, highlighting fantastic musicality and clean body isolation. Christchurch Girls High features an impressive 21 dancers on stage, and the polished Hagley Dance Company treat us to an excerpt from their upcoming graduation show, Filling The Gap. Hillmorton High School offers a refreshing music choice in Uptown Funk in the first half of the evening, while the second half includes a more sombre note in Burnside’s Gallipoli tribute, Salute.

Standouts of the evening include Passage, a poignant solo choreographed and danced by Hillmorton High School’s Brittney Clark, a humorous and well-danced puppet-inspired piece  from Hagley College, while Truth and Grace from St. Margaret’s College ends the show with beautiful lyrical technique.

The passion, dedication and enthusiasm these young people bring to their craft are an inspiration to see. They are the next generation of dancers, and opportunities like this support them in their drive to make their dreams reality. Kudos to all the dance teachers across the city whose patient and tireless commitment to their students makes bright the future of New Zealand dance.
