A nice safe show

This is my first show of the Comedy Festival and what better place than the home of Wellington Comedy – VK’s Comedy and Blues Bar. The lush red curtain, the microphone idling on stage and the audience filing in. Lloyd Langford has a pretty big reputation to maintain: “Left the audience roaring with laughter and disbelief,” his media release quotes.
Langford has a very easy style, conversational and warm. He walks through his set easily riffing with the audience and garnering relaxed laughs with his observational humour. Sex toys in the hotel room? No problem. The plight of the Kakapo? Easy as. Paula Yates and Mike Hutchence? Bit dated.
Overall this is a very accomplished performer but the material leaves me whelmed. He seems surprised that we have an OK attitude to a number of his observations. My feeling is that it’s because we’re a very accepting people and we’ve been here before. Simple observations about how the British-guy-discovers-NZ were novel in their day but we’re up for more. Especially in a comedy festival.
I feel like my nan could easily come to this show, not that that’s a put-down, it’s just that at a festival the Wellington crowd aren’t looking for comedy lite. This is a nice safe show that’s enjoyable.
