What a marvellous list of shows and people that have been nominated for this years awards. As someone who nerdishly hounds the theatres around Wellington, I was delighted as to the outcome of the nominations – feeling that they are well and truly deserved. I was surprised, however, ‘Nga Tangata Toa’ ‘Drawer of Knives’ and ‘Death of a Salesman’ were not picked up for any performance nods – as there was some exceptional acting work (from my humble point of view.) But, there are only so many nominations to go round and I would like to commend the panel on honouring some stunning human beings!

As always we can only feel comfort in believing that all the nominated shows and people deserve it. We also know that many missed out who were likewise deserving but when a year has been as good as this, that’s inevitable.  Everyone will have their heartfelt “But what about …?” list, including each and every one of us on the voting panel. That’s democracy for you – imperfect but the best we can do.  No-one should feel they’ve ‘lost’ just because they haven’t ‘won’ – and in my book every nominee is a winner regardless of the final outcome.

As a dedicated wgtn theatre lover, I am surprized that the Holy Sinner has received 2 nominations. I loved the production, but noticed that it was panned by most of the critics. I am pleased that some recognition has been given to this show. Also I do feel that Boys in the Band was a wonderful show from out of town that hasn’t been nominated. I love the idea of a theatre awards, but also hope they are not totally Wellicentric.

CONFUSION: woops! I meant ‘THE DINNER’ not ‘The Death of a …’ which was nominated – although well and truly deserved noms for them! Blaming lack of sleep!

To be fair to the awards panel, The Holy Sinner’s nominations are for set and lighting. Whatever we might think about the script and its presentation, the set for that show was impressive. I don’t remember a great deal about the lighting – beyond the fierce pyrotechnics that is.
