VOICE and ACCENT WORKSHOPS

Senior Tutor of Voice and Speech at Toi Whakaari: NZ Drama School.
 
THE VOICE IN VIOLENCE
This is an introduction to the techniques and skills of working with vocal extremes and stage violence.  We will work on techniques of how to shout, scream, cough, choke, and add aggression to the voice in the healthiest way possible.  This course is suited to those who have already received some vocal training; it is not suitable for those new to voice work.
 
Saturday May 15, Sunday May 16th 2010.
10am till 4pm each day.
Cost: $180 – $150 (students)
Minimum 8 participants. Maximum 12.
Deadline for application May 7th.
 
AMERICAN ACCENTS
This is an introduction to the skills needed to acquire a believable accent in General American, New York (Brooklyn) and the Deep South.  Aspects of the accents’ placement, general vocal quality, tensions, intonation patterns, rhythm, and sound changes will be covered. Participants will receive sample recordings and notes to practice outside of class time.

About the Instructor:
D’Arcy Smith is the Senior Tutor of Voice and Speech at Toi Whakaari: NZ Drama School.  He has worked extensively as an actor, teacher and voice and speech specialist in the United States and Canada. He holds a Masters in Acting and Graduate Diploma in Voice Teaching.  He has worked as a coach on numerous professional productions and taught voice, speech and accents to a variety of skill levels. He has studied intensely with a variety of teachers in a variety of techniques: including David Smukler (Linklater), Richard Armstrong (Roy Hart Theatre), Paul Farrington (Estill), Catherine Fitzmaurice, Dr. Wendy LeBorgne, Rocco Dal Vera, Louis Colaianni, Dudley Knight, and Gillian Lane-Plescia, among others. He has also acted professionally in Film, Television, Voice-Over and Theatre.
