THE ACTORS LABORATORY: FIRST WINTER SEASON WORHSOPS

Kia Ora,

We are extremely excited to announce two workshops with renowned theatre director Christian Penny, the first of the The Actors Laboratory winter season.

A Director principally, Christian has worked in a range of fields developing new New Zealand theatre works ranging from new plays, devised works, community theatre projects and most recently Opera. Christian is currently the Associate Director of Toi Whakaari: New Zealand Drama School. He has been the leader of the Masters Degree in Direction there for the last seven years.

Saturday 3rd July: Text, play and discovery

We will spend the day exploring short pieces of text from Anton Chekhov’s The Seagull. We will look at how we can employ a spirit of play and risk, matched with our own instincts and apply these to the text. Our aim is vibrant, inhabited, performances.  We will play games. We will explore intentions and beats. We will enact the scenes. Participants can expect to work both on the text and in their bodies, take risks, have fun and be stretched.

4th July: Directing

We will look at the work of directing and apply it to Chekhov’s The Seagull. We will spend some time focusing on the Meta questions embedded in the work and then direct each other in small excerpts. Participants can expect to explore directing in theory and practice at beginning, intermediate or advanced levels.
