The KATHRYN RAWLINGS AND ASSOCIATES Award for Best Entrance of the Year…

Does the rear end of the horse in Horseplay make an entrance or is it there from the start?

And if there is an award for Best Entrance then there should be one for Best Exit.

I nominate Michael Hurst exiting from the barber’s chair with his throat cut in Jesse Peach’s Sweeny Todd.

Best line from a Kiwi play–there must be several candidates from Dave Armstrong’s Le Sud.

The ELIZABETH WHITING Award for Best Costume of the Year: Caitlyn Brogan’s sheep costumes for Fitz Bunny: Lust for Glory. Incorporating hotpants, a sports top, garters, and not a scrap of wool.

The APRA Award for Best Singing in a Play: Sara Stone in Fitz Bunny: Lust for Glory. Ever tried singing, acting and dancing on stage for an entire hour? Not easy, is it?

The PEACH THEATRE COMPANY Award for Best Dancing in a Play: Daryl Wrightson in Fitz Bunny: Lust for Glory. Blimey, who knew the hedgehog could tapdance? In lime-green hotpants, no less.

(DISCLAIMER: Yes, it’s naff to nominate a show that you wrote, but I was in a different city for the production process, and was just as impressed by their achievements as anyone else in the audience. It’s also slightly less naff than three or more people spontaneously deciding to nominate the same person just hours apart. 😉

Hackman Awards highlight lack of theatre recognition in Auckland

By Hugh Sundae – NZ Herald

8:00 AM Monday Nov 29, 2010

Best Death Of The Year, Best Cross Gender Acting Of The Year, Best Pash of the Year – this is an awards ceremony like no other.

The second annual Hackman Theatre Awards were given out in Auckland last night, and while some accuse the theatre world of taking itself too seriously, these awards couldn’t take themselves any less seriously.

One category – Best Practitioners of the Year – is decided by a dart being thrown from the balcony by a representative of Directors, Designers, Production, Miscellaneous – and last night’s winners – Playwrights. [More]
