2011 DUNEDIN FRINGE FESTIVAL AWARDS

The 2011 Dunedin Fringe Festival is all wrapped up! The Festival attracted over 200 artists from all over New Zealand plus international guests.

Thirteen awards were presented in recognition of outstanding achievement in each art form as well as general awards, culminating in the Best of the Fringe Festival which was awarded to Footnote Dance for their production Hullapolloi.

Festival Director, Paul Smith, said the production of Hullapolloi was a challenging work for both the dancers and the audience. “The dancers were in full body suits that came up over their heads which meant they had to dance by sound and touch. The piece was engaging and provocative generating ongoing dialogue and debate.”

A panel of nine judges reviewed the acts based on:

  • Innovation: Where the work is well conceptualized, shows originality and takes risks
  • Experimentation: Where the work attempts to challenge the boundaries of the art form
  • Presentation: Where the work has high production values and is well realized
  • Engagement: Where the work provokes a strong response with audiences

The Dunedin Fringe Festival took a significant step forward this year with many major events that lifted the profile of the Festival and attracted a wider market. International acts such as the Barons of Tang won the hearts of Dunedin people and launched the revamped Festival Club, which was a major highlight of the Festival. Several comedy shows sold out including Wilson Dixon’s American Dream and The Real New Zealand Tour, while the ukulele workshop by Hamilton’s Big Muffin Serious Band attracted over 100 people of all ages.
