FABULOUS OPPORTUNITY FOR GAY MALE WRITERS

Men who love men and want to write about it are being presented with a unique opportunity to develop their skills at a writers retreat near Takaka in July.

Fabulous Arts Aotearoa New Zealand (FAANZ) is seeking applications for a limited number of places for New Zealand’s first MSM (Men Scribbling Men) seven-day writing retreat, to be held at Autumn Farm, near Takaka, from 16 to 24 July 2011. Applicants must be men who identify as gay, bisexual, takataapui, fa’afafine, or otherwise belonging to the queer communities of Aotearoa New Zealand, Samoa, Tokelau, Niue or Cook Islands.

Mates and Lovers playwright Ronald Nelson says the retreat will be a unique opportunity to write, edit, polish, or finish an unpublished writing project in the peaceful surroundings of the South Island’s scenic Golden Bay.

One place will be considered for each of the following categories: Adult fiction (short story, novel), youth fiction (short story, novel), screenplays for film or television, and stage plays. All applications will be judged anonymously by published gay writers: novelist and historian Stevan Eldred-Grigg; playwrite and director Ronald Trifero Nelson; film director Christopher Banks; and short story author Steve Attwood.

Judges will make their selections based on samples of work and the applicant’s plan as to how they will use their time at the retreat. If no applications in any category meet the judges’ standards for promising work of excellence, placements will not be made. Those chosen to attend MSM will be announced on 12 June 2011.

Writers selected to participate in MSM will only have to pay for their own travel to Takaka. MSM, FAANZ and Autumn Farm and sponsors (Wellington’s S&M’s Cocktail and Lounge Bar) will provide single occupancy accommodation, meals, heating, power and internet for the retreat participants.

MSM applicants must be aged not less than 16 years; be a citizen or permanent resident of Aotearoa New Zealand, Samoa Tokelau, Niue or Cook Islands; be available for 16-24 July 2011; and be a man writing about gay/queer/homoerotic life. Applicants’ work for the retreat must not have been published in any form (including on-line) and (in the case of scripts) must not have been produced by either professional or amateur companies. Applications must be received by 5 June 2011.

What is MSM?

Men Scribbling Men is a seven-day writing retreat at Autumn Farm, near Takaka, in beautiful Golden Bay of the northwestern South Island, from 16 to 24 July 2011.

MSM and Fabulous Arts Aotearoa New Zealand (FAANZ) are seeking applications for a limited number of places from men who identify as gay, bisexual, takataapui, fa’afafine, or as otherwise belonging to the queer communities of Aotearoa New Zealand, Samoa, Tokelau, Niue or Cook Islands.

This is a unique opportunity to write, edit, polish or finish and launch an unpublished writing project in the peaceful gardens, tree-lined fields and streams of this beautiful organic farm.

Established gay male writers will mentor the retreat participants providing guidance and inspiration to help participants get the maximum benefit from their time on the farm.

Writers selected to participate in MSM will only have to pay for their own travel to Takaka. MSM, FAANZ and Autumn Farm will provide single occupancy accommodation, meals, heating, power and internet for the writing retreat. The 2011 retreat will be the first of what is planned to be an annual event in the queer arts calendar.

MSM carries on the FAANZ mission statement to be engaged with ‘works that reflect, engage and inspire the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, takataapui, fa’afafine, and queer communities of Aotearoa/New Zealand.’

MSM has three goals:

  • Encouraging new works that explore the experiences of men who love men.
  • Providing quiet concentrated time and space for men to write fabulously.
  • Helping readers of all sorts become aware of the writing produced.

  • Biography (not offered for 2011)
Please email to david@faanz.com by midnight Sunday 5 June 2011 with the following attachments (all documents must be typed using WORD or an equivalent software):

A concept or treatment, no more than one page, telling us about your writing project. This document should not show your name but rather the same phone number you use with the covering letter to your writing sample.

A sample of either the first 10 pages of prose you’re proposing to develop during the retreat or the first 15 pages of a script or screenplay. The sample won’t be judged as a finished piece of writing. We’ll be seeking evidence of your intrinsic gift for writing. The writing sample must be accompanied by 2 cover sheets. The first will contain your name, address, email address, phone numbers and the writing genre to which your writing sample belongs. The second cover sheet will contain one of the phone numbers you place on the first cover sheet.

A plan, no more than one page, outlining your goals for the retreat. What are you aiming to achieve during the days you spend at Autumn Farm? You don’t need to write us an essay. Bullet points will be fine. This document should not show your name but rather the same phone number you use with the cover sheet for your writing sample.

A fifty-word biography and head-and-shoulder photograph of yourself (high resolution digital JPEG file) suitable for a press release.

NOTE 1: We regret that MSM does not, currently, have the capacity to assess applications and sample writing in any language other than English. We hope to have this capacity for future retreats.

NOTE 2: MSM recognises that not all men who love men are ‘out’. We require your genuine details for this application but if you do not wish your real identity to be released, please make it clear in your application, do not supply a photograph, and give us a suitable pseudonym by which you wish to be known.
